This Saturday the heats for two elite Group 1 greyhound races will be conducted at Cannington – the $80, 000 Sky Racing Galaxy (715m) and the $140, 000 Sky Racing Perth Cup (530m).

Eight heats of the Perth Cup will take place and are scheduled as races one, two, six, seven, eight, nine, ten and eleven.

The Galaxy has three heats programmed as races three, four and five. For the times of each heat see the race programme below.

Perth Cup Heat 1:

The first Perth Cup heat features start sprinter Dyna Lachlan drawn in box eight. The Andrea Dailly-trained champion will jump as the hot favourite following his recent wins in both the Group 1 Adelaide Cup and the Group 1 Australian Cup. Dyna Lachlan has had just one start at Cannington in the National Sprint where he was narrowly defeated.

Other quality dogs engaged in the first qualifier include Queensland runner My Amigo and speedy bitch Joanne Monelli.

The Sandra Hunt-trained My Amigo looks good for a place here if he can get away well from box seven in his first start at Cannington.

Speedy bitch Joanne Monelli, who was one of WA’s Greyhound of the Year finalists, is drawn well in box two. One of the best chasers in WA if not Australia, she has displayed scintillating recent form of late winning six of her past eight starts and placing second in the other two. May cause an upset.

Perth Cup Heat 2:

The second Perth Cup heat is more of an open affair featuring a star-studded field headlined by odds-on favourite, Group 1 Hobart Thousand winner Prankster. The Robert Britton-trained son of Bombastic Shiraz has been on fire over the last few months, and if successful here will be running in his sixth Group 1 final since November.

Prankster’s biggest rival is the Graeme Bate-trained Dentax Bale in box seven. The son of Collision missed out on a spot in the Australian Cup when he fell in his heat and will be looking to make amends for this here.

Oxley Spirit has secured the prized inside running with box one. The daughter of Whisky Assassin is a fast starter and despite this being the toughest test in her short career, she has the speed to lead here and may be hard to catch.

The Darren McDonald-trained Octane Show is good dog and would be in with an excellent chance in his first start at WA since August if it wasn’t for his awkward box six draw and the class of his rivals. Still one to consider for an each way bet.

Perth Cup Heat 3:

The third qualifier has one of the most even fields of all the Perth Cup heats with at least four really strong chances.

Having secured the rails draw, the Linda Britton-trained Regent Diamond is a definite contender coming off an impressive Group 3 Sprint Challenge run from the same box last week.

South Australian chaser Strictly Mambo is also a big threat. Having drawn barrier two the Adelaide Cup runner-up won at trial here last start and if he jumps well will be one to watch.

The Kenneth Gill-trained Sunny Boy Love always shows good early speed and so has a chance here despite his box six draw. And finally, another of Anakie trainer Andrea Dailly’s contingent Allen Shaul in box three is a well positioned to at least place here with a solid strike rate.

Perth Cup Heat 4:

The fourth qualifier of the night stars hot Queenslander High Earner in box three. Is coming off a succession of good runs at Group level including a win in the WA Derby, fastest heat winner for the Group 1 Adelaide Cup and a close runner-up in the Group 1 Temlee. High Earner looked set for a sensational Australian Cup run too but fell in the final and will be looking to atone for that and finally secure a Group 1 victory this year.

The other highly fancied starter will be wearing the pink, the Mark Delbridge-trained Flash Of Light. The Victorian daughter of Premier Fantasy is a strong runner and has the speed and Group race experience, including a recent win in the Group 2 Rookie Rebel, to take the lead early and hold on for the win.

Flying Shambi has a brilliant record over this trip, winning all five from the rails. Is a proven chaser with plenty of ability and looks well positioned for a place or even a win here at decent odds.

Perth Cup Heat 5:

Zini’s Gump is a local runner with a good chance here following their recent form and their favourable box one draw. Other top dogs with claims in the fifth heat include the speedy son of Collide Sandhog in box five and Proven Jett wearing the green rug.

Proven Jet ran second to High Earner in their Group 1 Australian Cup heat and with an impressive record finishing no worse than fourth in 16 of his 17 starts, looks a real threat.

Also keep an eye on the Andrea Dailly-trained Manuel Bale in box eight who has a few great Group race heats up his sleeve.

Perth Cup Heat 6:

The sixth Perth Cup heat is dominated by Kay Size in box three with the Jason Thompson-trained Lady Gaga in box four also a consistent bitch with a chance here if they can gain a clear run.

Also on the path to success is Queenslander Pacific Maestro in box eight. Has plenty of ability as proved by his beating Dyna Lachlan in the Group 1 Silver Chief heats. One of the better chances in this qualifier.

Perth Cup Heat 7:

Wearing the red is Code One, a speedy son of Pure Octane who has a brilliant record at this track and enjoys the rails. Has won all four of his starts from this draw and has the stocks to win the seventh qualifier.

Other strong rivals include speedy black bitch Arvo’s Breeze drawn well in both three and the Darren McDonald-trained Ultra Rumble in box five having his second start at the Cannington track.

Perth Cup Heat 8:

The final Perth Cup qualifier of the night features another excellent eight dogs, headlined by Michael Stringer’s classy Topline Doovee, the bitch from Tasmania with the biggest chance here. A daughter of boom sire Bond, Topline Doovee is already a Group winner having taken out the Group 2 WA Oaks last year.

Also watch the dog in the pink, Hanify’s Legend. The Jason Thompson-trained Victorian chaser has finished in the money in 12 of his 15 starts. Has run second in two Group heats in recent times and looks a big show.

Galaxy Heats:

The three Galaxy qualifiers feature an elite line up of eager dogs with loads of talent. Big names in the heats include the brilliant Graeme Jose-trained son of Pure Octane Mantra Lad.

The sensational Victorian chaser looks set to take out the first Galaxy qualifier without a worry, drawn ideally in box two the multiple Group winner is a top chance with his only foreseeable threats being the Graeme Bate-trained Jarvis Bale in seven and New South Wales runner Blue Lorian in the pink.

Jarvis Bale has made the finals for 10 Group race finals in the past year and is a definite contender as is Blue Lorian who won the Group 3 Stayers Challenge here last week in his maiden run at WA.

The second heat has last year’s National Sprint champion Dashing Corsair looking ripe in box two, the classy Next Top Model with the speed to lead from box five and the emerging superstar Satanic Cash coming off a brilliant second in the Group 2 Zoom Top wearing the pink.

The third Galaxy qualifier is headlined by the dazzling Drill ‘Em fresh off a victory in the Group 1 Super Stayers at The Meadows. Drawn ideally in box two Drill’ Em is the one to beat here. Other dogs that have claims include Symmetry in box three and the impressive Group winner Forty Twenty in box five.

Finals for the Galaxy and Perth Cup will be held next Saturday night on March 13.

This Saturday night The Meadows will again be host to the best night of greyhound racing over the weekend as they fill their event card with the hotly contested second round of heats for the Group 1 MTD Australian Cup (525m) and the two heats for the Group 1 Macro Meats Super Stayers (725m).

Eight heats of the Australian Cup will run, featuring 64 of the country’s top sprinters, many of who are coming from the prestigious Group invitation-only features held at the same track last week.

Australian Cup Heat 1:

Heat one features the talented High Earner in box two who put in a sensational run in the Group 1 Temlee last week. He lead all the way only to be overtaken by Fedex in the final few metres and missed out on the win by just three quarters of a length. He looks well positioned for a win here though, if he can find the front first ahead of Pacific Maestro on his inside. Pacific Maestro in box one loves the rail draws and may just cause an upset. Also keep an eye on the speedy and consistent Proven Jett in box seven, seeking his third consecutive win.

Australian Cup Heat 2:

The second heat has Queensland speedster Mr. Metz in box one, a possibility to lead all the way here. Last week he was slightly outclassed in the Temlee, placing eighth. Now he has the experience of a run at the track up his sleeve, he is sure to recover. Starting beside Mr. Metz in box two is last-start winner Arvo’s Sphinx who likes this track, while Graeme Bate’s consistent Dentax Bale in seven may also feature.

Australian Cup Heat 3:

Recently crowned the 2009 Victorian GOTY, Cindeen Shelby is setting herself up for another win from box one. Despite two poor performances last start, including seventh place in the Temlee, her level of competition in this heat is nowhere near as high and she will enjoy the rails. Andrea Dailly has her speedy runner Manuel Bale starting at the other end of the field in box eight. Manuel Bale loves the outside draw and has won four from five wearing the pink. Also worth a look is Papa Cool in seven who boasts the second fastest time at this distance and has shown sensational recent form, winning three times and placing second twice in their last five starts.

Australian Cup Heat 4:

Last start winner of the Group 2 Rookie Rebel, Flash Of Light starts from box two in this heat. She is likely to start as the favourite and boasts a scintillating best time here of 29.89s. Also worth a look are the in-form Shredded Cheese in seven and Allen Shaul in box three who is coming off four successive wins.

Australian Cup Heat 5:

Fedex, who took out the Group 1 Temlee here last week, has claims in heat five despite an awkward box six draw. On either side of him he has two consistent rivals in Heather’s Tiger (box five) and the talented Zenith (box seven). Both dogs are coming off two consecutive wins and Heather’s Tiger also boasts the fastest personal best time, a sizzling 29.67 that he ran at this track last week.

Australian Cup Heat 6:

In the sixth heat Cranbourne trainer Darren McDonald has his consistent dog Cosmic Rumble starting from three. Cosmic Rumble is coming off two successive victories and has won two of his three starts wearing the white rug. Drawn wide in seven is the Graeme Bate-trained Dyna Forte, who boasts an impressive personal best her of 29.93. Dyna Forte loves this track and if they can cross the field early and beat Cosmic Rumble to the front they may be in for a win.

Australian Cup Heat 7:

Heat seven will surely be one of the night’s highlights featuring a star studded field that includes Robo Raptor and Hot Price starting in boxes one and two respectively. Both runners are coming off a string of unbeatable recent form, winning their past five starts. Also lining up is Ultra Rumble in box three, another top dog from the Darren McDonald kennel. Allen Zander also has claims.

Australian Cup Heat 8:

The final Australian Cup heat is another beauty with the in-form Mystical Soul, trained by Jamie Ennis, starting in box six. But all eyes will be on the brilliant Dyna Lachlan jumping from box three, who ran an astounding personal best of 29.79 here. Also keep an eye on box two where Springvale Dash will be looking for the lead.

Super Stayers Heats:

Both of the Super Stayers’ heats star an elite line-up of classy runners. Engaged in heat one is Dashing Corsair blessed with box one. The Dwyer Lennon-trained son of Malfoy has won seven of their nine box one starts and did well to place second to Lochinvar Vogue in the Gold Cup last week at Wentworth.

Starting on the outside from box eight is the promising and reliable South Australian chaser Satanic Cash who ran second to Drill ‘Em in the Group 2 Zoom Top here last Saturday. Drill ‘Em is also running in heat one, but is drawn awkwardly in box five and has not won any of their previous starts wearing the yellow rug.

The second Super Stayers heat has a terrific field that includes pacemaker Headley Bale, the classy Next Top Model and Jarvis Bale.

Headley Bale has plenty of ability to lead from box one, but often fades in the later stages of the race. Next Top Model starts from box three and always shows blistering speed, but could only manage fourth in the Zoom Top last week. Third placegetter in the Zoom Top, Jarvis Bale starts wide from seven in the heat. The Graeme Bate trained son of Sonic Flight does not have an impressive record wearing the black, but may be able to sneak in for a place here.

On Saturday night at The Meadows’ cracker race meeting, Flash Of Light was the only pre-race favourite in any of the Group features to claim victory when she took out the $25 000 Group 2 Macro Meats Rookie Rebel.

The Mark Delbridge-trained Flash Of Light ($2.60) defeated Aint Workin’ ($7.90) by a length with the Darren McDonald-trained Ultra Rumble ($5.40) a mere nose back in third.

Delbridge further enjoyed the win as his wife Lisa trained the runner-up Aint Workin’.

The kennelmates Flash Of Light (8) and Aint Workin’ (6) were first out of the boxes and remained head to head throughout the race as they fought for the lead. Aint Workin’ ran to the front going down the back straight, but Flash Of Light stayed close.

By the home turn she was ready to make her move, coming up on the outside of her kennelmate and overtaking to secure the win in the final few metres, while Ultra Rumble came up on the inside for third.

Flash Of Light, the daughter of Premier Fantasy and Trendy La Maze ran 34.48s over the 600m feature on Saturday night and has now won 22 of her 46 career starts.

The Gardens is set to come alight this Saturday night as they host one of the year’s most exciting race meets headlined by three Group races and eight heats for the Australian Cup.

Race goers and punters can expect big things from the night as the Group 1 Temlee, Group 2 Zoom Top and the $25 000 Group 2 Macro Meats Rookie Rebel (600m) all feature elite line-ups of the best greyhounds getting around.

The Mark Delbridge-trained Flash Of Light has emerged as the clear odds-on favourite. Drawn well on the outside in box eight, they have started wearing the pink six times and claimed victory in four of those. Flash Of Light boasts the quickest personal best time at this track, a scintillating 34.13, and ensuring a good start and similar speed looks poised to claim their maiden Group race win.

The other top pick gaining plenty of attention is Darren McDonald’s Ultra Rumble. The son of Spiral Nikita also has a sharp personal best at this track of 34.29 and has been on fire recently. They have a good record at this track including a win in the New Years Cup and stand a really strong chance on Saturday.

Aint Workin’ is a classy chaser who does well over these middle distance runs but has drawn awkwardly in six. If the Lisa Delbridge-trained bitch can find a front run early on she stands a good chance to place here.

Domino Vitali has been scratched and first reserve Excel Like Speed takes their place in box five. Trained by Anthony Azzopardie they have had great recent form lately, coming off two impressive wins both at this 600m distance.

The Group 2 Rookie Rebel will run as race five on the fantastic 11-race card and is due to commence at 8:15pm (VIC time).

It was a shocking night for favourite backers at Cranbourne on Monday night, as Arvo’s Florence claimed an upset victory in the $30 000 final of the Group 2 Karingal Hub TAB Cranbourne Cup (520m).

Starting the race with generous odds of $9.10, Arvo’s Florence defeated the Darren McDonald-trained Ultra Rumble ($4.40) by an easy 3 ¾ lengths with another long-priced runner, Curwen Walker ($15.20) a further 1 ¾ lengths back for third.

The highly fancied Fedex, installed as the $3 pre-race favourite, just missed out on making it an all local trifecta, coming in a head behind Curwen Walker in fourth.

Book Of Music in box two found the lead early on but Arvo’s Florence soon came up on the outside, overtaking the eventual seventh placegetter on the first corner and maintaining their front position right to the end for an impressive win.

Runner-up Ultra Rumble made their assault on the outside from box eight, while Curwen Walker made up a lot of ground to come in a fast finishing third after trailing well back mid race.

It was another strong win for the increasingly consistent Arvo’s Florence who was the fastest qualifier for the final. Coming home in a smashing 30.17 seconds over the 520m race, the Terry Burns-trained dog managed to overcome their wide box seven draw to win their third race in succession and bring their career record to six wins from 18 starts.

Next Monday night, January 25, Cranbourne is set to host the final of the Group 2 Karingal Hub TAB Cranbourne Cup (520m) where eight quality sprinters are ready to fight for the $30 000 to the winner prize.

The Darren McDonald-trained Ultra Rumble is likely to start as the odds on favourite after taking out heat five last week in impressive style, blowing his rivals away by over eight lengths. He likes the wide draws too and so starting from box eight will be of no concern to the local star.

Jumping beside Ultra Rumble is the fastest qualifier from the heats Arvo’s Florence in box seven, who blasted home in heat six in a time of 30.26. The ever consistent Arvo’s Florence is still at decent odds and is aiming for their third successive win.

Ultra Rumble still boasts the best time at this track and distance, a brilliant 30.23 that he ran back in October last year.

Another dog sure to put in a great run and play a big part in this final is the classy Fedex. Drawn in barrier four, the Jason Thompson-trained Fedex was victorious in heat seven, is a natural born leader and a dual Group 1 winner in 2009.

Stagger Inn, who took out heat three last week and is trained by Garry Seldrig, has secured the prized inside alley and if they can get away well and gain some early speed they may cause an upset.

Ultra Rumble, Arvo’s Florence, Fedex and Stagger Inn are the four locally trained dogs in the final and as the Vic’s dominate the betting markets, it may just be a local trifecta on the night.

The Cranbourne Cup will take place as race eight at the meeting’s monster 12 race card and is scheduled to jump at 9:18pm (VIC time).
