On Saturday night the 2010 National Distance Championship series came to a thrilling end at Angle Park with New South Wales stayer Blue Lorian snaring victory in the Group 1 event and taking home the $50,000-to-the-winner prize for their connections.

The Peter Whye-trained Blue Lorian went out as the $5.50 third elect in the SportsBet markets and after snaring the lead mid-way through the race, the son of Surf Lorian went on to defeat local champ Satanic Cash ($2.80) by four lengths with Tasmanian dog Sitka ($17) a further one and three quarter lengths back in third.

Eventual third placegetter Sitka was first out of the boxes and held a good early lead, out by three lengths heading into the turn for the first time with Blue Lorian sitting second.

Racing along the back stretch Blue Lorian stole the lead from Sitka after sweeping to the outside, dashing to front and hanging on all the way for a classy win.

Runner-up Satanic Cash pulled out a brilliant late burst to tackle second place from Sitka in the final strides after being badly checked earlier in the race, while odds-on favourite Dashing Corsair ($2.60) finished fourth nearly seven lengths back from the winner after being slow to jump from the boxes and never making up the ground.

Blue Lorian has now won 23 of their 44 career starts, winning the Distance Championship (731m) in a sharp 43.01.

Saturday’s National Distance Championship was the final run for the smart and versatile Reign Over Me.

Reign Over Me failed to fire in the final finishing seventh and has since been retired to serve as a sire.

The other highlight event on Saturday night was the final of the Group 1 National Sprint Championship won by another NSW greyhound, Smooth Fancy.

Punters that bet at the TAB would not have gotten the best odds or payouts on the dog races over the weekend. For the top price on every dog in every race there is only one place to go, SportsBet.

This Saturday the two hottest dog races to enjoy a punt on through SportsBet will be held at Angle Park when they host the $50,000-to-the-winner finals of the Group 1 National Distance Championship (731m) and the Group 1 National Sprint Championship (515m).

A month of qualifiers held across the country at Albion Park, Wentworth Park, Cannington, Tasman Park, The Meadows, Sandown Park and Angle Park have culminated into two elite showdowns where the best staying dog and top sprinter in the country will be decided.

There are two clear favourites in the 2010 National Distance Championship with the in-form Dashing Corsair and Satanic Cash.

Coming off four straight wins and displaying freakish form, the Dwyer Lennon-trained Dashing Corsair is drawn ideally in box one and will be hard to beat with a good jump.

With an impressive record of 10 wins and four places from 15 starts wearing the red rug, Dashing Corsair is the classiest dog here and has the speed and ability to lead all the way.

Other top chances in the National Distance Final include Blue Lorian who has experience at the track including a sharp trial win here and the Darren McDonald-trained Reign Over Me in box seven.

Reign Over me represents a great value bet at SportsBet and with some luck can win this at juicy odds and cause an upset.

National Distance Championship Best Bet – Reign Over Me can win this at juicy odds through SportsBet with a bit of luck

In the 2010 National Sprint Championship a very open field of top-class dogs makes this a tough race to tip.

There are any number of runners with real claims in this sprint feature, but the Darren Brown-trained Victorian sprinter Cosmic Chief will start as the odds-on favourite.

Drawn well in box two and running in red hot form of late, this white and black speedster will be hard to catch if they get away well.

Other exciting prospects that could cause some danger for Cosmic Chief include Heather Collins’ fast bitch Arsonist in box one who looks the value pick, the super consistent Where’s Panco who loves this track and Pedrosa who is another in-form dog coming off an impressive nine-straight wins that could lead early.

National Sprint Championship Best Bet – Arsonist & Pedrosa could both stage an upset but look the top Place bets at SportsBet

The 2010 National Distance Championship final is scheduled as Race 7 at Angle Park on Saturday and is due to jump at 7:14pm while the National Sprint Championship decider will follow as Race 9 at 7:58pm.

To get in on the action of these sensational dog races don’t head to your local TAB and get inferior odds and payouts. Check out the hot odds and generous betting offers available at SportsBet and enjoy a free $100 bet as a new customer!

Last night at Brisbane’s Albion Park, the Craig Chappelow-trained Pulp claimed a surprise victory in the $15,000-to-the-winner Group 3 Big Dog Cup (600m) ahead of a top class field of rivals.

Pulp jumped from box seven and at the line was able to hold off the hot favourite Dashing Corsair by a length, with the speedy Velocity Regina a further 1 ¾ lengths away for third.

Finishing in a sharp time of 34.97, Pulp found the front coming into the final turn and was impressive when keeping the lead out wide despite a late challenge by champion Queenslander Dashing Corsair.

Flash Of Light and Velocity Regina got away to a good start taking the lead early, with Dashing Corsair unable to fully recover after checking off the heels of Velocity Regina approaching the home turn.

With the win, the lightly raced son of Collision x Frosty Fruits gave Chappelow his first Group race victory from 12 attempts.

The New South Wales trainer is now looking towards the McKenna Memorial (595m) at Sandown for Pulp.

First reserve Our Movie Star gained a start in the Group final last night after one of the warm favourites, Next Top Model, was scratched a few days before because of a chip in her hock.

There is plenty of excellent dog racing on this weekend as both Wentworth Park and Cannington host the heats for upcoming group race features.

Qualifiers for the $25,000 Group 2 Overflow @ Stud Bob Payne Winter Stakes (520m) will play out at Wentworth featuring top sprinting talents including Dana Beatrice, the Reg Kay-trained Elite Blue Size, Fancy Mandy, multiple Group winner Fedex, and Take The Kitty.

Also on Saturday night are the $35,000 Group 2 Schweppes WA Oaks (530m) heats at Cannington, with quality hopefuls fighting it out including Greta Bale, the Andrea Dailly-trained Cara Bale, and New South Wales runner Odessa Shiraz.

Tonight Brisbane’s Albion Park track will come alight as eight of the nation’s best stayers converge for the $50,000-to-the-winner final for the Group 1 Cartwright Property Group Gold Cup (710m).

Sure to start as the hot pre-race favourite after last week’s sensational 41.62 heat win is Dashing Corsair. Last Thursday night the Dwyer Lennon-trained star sizzled to a 7.25 length victory ahead of Allen Zander and Jarvis Bale in the opening Gold Cup heat, running just short of the track record he previously set, a sizzling 41.44.

Dashing Corsair (Malfoy x Rose Flamenco) has drawn box seven tonight, which is the only thing working against the April 07 whelp as he has only won two of his 10 starts wearing the black rug.

But if Dashing Corsair gets away well he should lead, always running impressive first sectionals, and will be very hard to catch here at his favourite track especially if he can reproduce his track record, making it five wins in as many starts at Albion Park over this distance.

One of Dashing Corsair’s biggest threats will come from the classy daughter of Flying Penske, brilliant black bitch Nellie Noodles in box three.

Nellie Noodles was the fastest heat winner last week when she claimed an emphatic 12.75 length win ahead of Countess Of Cork in a sharp 41.57. Trained by master mentor Robert Britton, Nellie Noodles is the in-form stayer of the season and remains unbeaten in her three starts at the track as she seeks her fourth consecutive Albion Park victory tonight.

Having had just 14 race starts, Nellie Noodles looks a top chance as she has her debut run wearing the white rug.

Other top dogs lining up in the Gold Cup tonight that look good for a place bet with IASbet include the Andrea Dailly-trained Allen Shaul drawn ideally in box one, and talented NSW stayer Blue Lorian who always finds the line hard in box four.

Meanwhile two dogs that could cause an upset and with a bit of luck beat home the favourites are the Darren McDonald-trained Reign Over Me who also took out a heat last week and if improves this start will be one to watch in box six, and Graeme Bate’s super consistent Jarvis Bale having his 82nd race start who has the experience and class to out run them all if he is at his best wearing the pink rug tonight.

The Group 1 Cartwright Property Group Gold Cup Final is scheduled as race eight on tonight’s bumper 10-event card at Albion Park and is due to jump at 9:08pm.

The other group greyhound race final on tonight is the $40,000 Group 3 The Dawson (515m) at Sandown Park featuring talents such as Fedex, Atomic Voodoo, Cosmic Chief and Flash of Light.

Check out the odds for both of these excellent finals at IASbet before they jump tonight!

Media Release: AGRA

AGRA’s Run of the Month for May 2010 has been awarded to all distance Queensland star Dashing Corsair. He set the time standard back on the 18th of March and was most unlucky not to win the award that month. Recording 41.48 for the 710 metres it was highly unlikely he could go quicker.

However he did and again set the Albion Park 710m track record stepping out on May 20th he broke his own record leading throughout to score by 10 and a quarter lengths in 41.44.

Dashing Corsair is a credit to his trainer Dwyer Lennon and his wife Desley who “live for the dog”. Desley handled the dog on the night, but husband Dwyer went through a few anxious moments during the race.

“When Symmetry settled into second not long after the start, I admit jI was worried because he is such a strong finisher,” said Dwyer.

He need not have.

Dashing Corsair opened right up with a 12.30 middle section and put paid to his rivals, and put paid to the track record as well.

Dashing Corsair maintained his winning form scoring in a heat of the Group 1 Gold Cup last Thursday night, recording 41.61 he will be well fancied to win the final on his favourite track.

Dwyer Lennon indicated he may even drop Dashing Corsair back to the 600 metres for the Big Dog Cup in a couple of week’s time.

“There are no staying races coming up for him for about three months after the Gold Cup and he needs to keep racing.”

Dwyer is not even ruling out a switch back to sprints for Dashing Corsair after the Big Dog Cup series.

“He trialled 30.50 around Ipswich a few weeks ago, so he can still sprint with the best of them.”

Dashing Corsair is a Red Fawn dog whelped April 2007 by Malfoy from Rose Flamenco (Southern Champ x Rose Regal). He is raced by Paddy Finch and trained by Dwyer Lennon. He has now raced on 80 occasions for 33 wins and 22 placings and his overall stake earnings stand at $207,620.

As usual we had some outstanding runs recorded in May but two runs in particular were most unlucky not to win this month’s award. Firstly an outstanding last to first effort from Satanic Cash in a heat of the Sandown Cup on May 6th. While last week’s brilliant performance from Nellie Noodles in her heat of the Gold Cup was another super effort. Both runs would have won most other months, but there can only be one winner and that was Dashing Corsair.

AGRA congratulates owner Paddy Fitch, trainer Dwyer Lennon and Dashing Corsair on being judged the AGRA Run of the Month for May 2010. He joins last month’s winner Nellie Noodles and the previous months winners Drill Em’, Blue Lorian and Goodesy as this year’s AGRA Runs of the Month for 2010.
