Top stayer Zipping Lad has maintained favouritism for Saturday’s Group 2 2012 Globe Memorial Plate Final 720m at Wentworth Park despite recording a slower heat time last week.

The Jason MacKay trained dog notched up his seventh win at the track from nine starts in the time of 42.62 sec.

Zipping Lad jumped uncharacteristically slowly but headed to the rail and avoided early race trouble.

He became stronger with each stride and easily defeated He’ My Future by five lengths.

The honour of the quickest heat time went to Victorian Echelon (from box four) in 42.55 sec.

The son of Mogambo jumped midfield and worked his way to the front in the final stages to defeat distance first starter He Knows Uno (from box 1).

Both dogs have drawn wide in the final while Zipping Lad will jump from the same box three.

Echelon has box eight which suits his style as he can avoid any early trouble.

He Knows Uno was slow early last week but railed up to be in front after a lap.

He is another who always runs a good race Wentworth Park and the three dogs seem to have the strongest chance in the final.

Outside the three roughies Thrilling Frank and Crafty Lady both ran respectable heats.

Crafty Lady made a stack of ground late after being a long way back.

She unfortunately has drawn badly in box six, the same box as when fourth to Echelon in the heat beaten six lengths.

If there is to be a bolter winning this race Crafty Lady would be it.

Tips: Echelon 1, Zipping Lad 2, He Knows Uno 3 Crafty Lady 4.

It’s rare when a box draw goes the way of all main chances but that is the case in tonight’s 2011 Big Dog Challenge (600m) at Albion Park (600m).

A classy field has gathered after two 2011 Big Dog Challenge heats held last Thursday which saw some tight finishes.

While Pure Adrenalin has always been ultra consistent, he has stepped up to another level lately.

He recently stopped the clock over 520 in 30.15 and last week was the quickest 2011 Big Dog Challenge heat winner in 35.41 sec beating the highly regarded Isadel and Metz Magic.

Pure Adrenalin likes to race off the rail and box seven in the final suits his style.

It is the same case with the 2011 National Sprint champ Metz Magic who has drawn in box eight for the 2011 Big Dog Challenge final.

The Ron Ball-trained son of Bombastic Shiraz copped interference twice in last week’s heat and finished third to Pure Adrenalin beaten under a length.

Metz Magic raced once in 19 starts from box eight and won in 30.02 sec over the 520m at this track.

He has the class to take the 2011 Big Dog Challenge final and will be better for his first try over the 600m last week.

Isadel and Mercy Rule also have class.

Serial city dwellers with good consistent records.

Mercy Rule is closer to the end than the start of her career but is still racing well.

Mercy Rule won the Vince Curry Consolation as a pup and has also made the final of the Group 1 Winter Cup and Brisbane Cup final this year.

She has performed best from inside boxes throughout her career and from box one gets her chance.

Trainer Pam Field says Mercy’s Rule needs to lead to become the 2011 Big Dog Challenge winner.

“She’s run a 10.04 first section at Albion Park over the distance,” she said.

“But she’s got a bit of speed in Isadel and Ronray Reward drawn outside her.

“She’s been remarkably injury free, very consistent and very honest.”

Isadel rarely leads and gets beaten but Pure Adrenalin knocked it off fair and square last week.

From three starts at 600m she has won once and placed twice.

Her win was in 34.96 sec and was just one of her 18 wins in 42 starts.

Isadel can lead here and in that case would be better for last week’s 600m run, her first over that trip since October.

The Graeme Bate-trained galloper Stack ‘Em Flat is another who will be better for its heat win in 35.71sec.

The dogs Brisbane minder Tom Tzouvelis plans to “get tough”

“Graeme told me to give him an easy week after his second to Iso Octane here last week, we’ll get into him this week for the final,” he said.

That effort against Iso Octane when beaten a nose was impressive when Stack ‘Em Flat stormed home.

Stack ‘Em Flat is a winner of 32 races and handles any box.

2011 BIG DOG CHALLENGE 600m –comment, ratings and tips

1 MERCY RULE (Pam Field): Has won five of eight starts over this trip here and loves box one. Good second to Iso Octane on Monday over 520m. In form and can win. Rating 7.

2 STACK ‘EM FLAT (Graeme Bate): Finished well from back in the field to win a heat last week in 35.71. With great trainer and rarely runs a bad race. Likely to improve. Right in it. Rating 7.

3.ISADEL (Christina Apap): Honest bitch who led and caught in the last stride last week. Has broken 35 secs over this trip. Can lead and rarely runs a bad race. Right in it. Rating 7.

4 RONRAD REWARD (Robert McGregor): Showed good pace last week from box one and appeared to have its chance when beaten length in slowish time. Had box one last week and it looks a tougher task from this draw. Rating 3.

5 MENTAWAI (Michael Menken): Very consistent of late and led past two when narrowly beaten. Likes to race off the fence. Chance of leading here is more remote and box makes it tough. Perhaps a place but happy to leave out. Rating 4.

6 NOIR WARRIOR (Peter Ruetschi): Won here in 35.33 and 35.44 recently which is right up with last week’s heat times. Likes to rail and box makes it a little tougher. Honest but place may be best. Rating 4.

7. PURE ADRENALIN (Darren Russell): Racing well having won the past two. Likes to run wide on the track and this box suits. Likely to be biggish odds despite being the quickest heat winner. Eachway chance. Rating 6.

8. METZ MAGIC (Ron Ball): Very good when he gets it right. Slow early and works his way through the field from there. Won at lone previous start from box 8. Definitely good enough to win. Rating 8.

TIPS: Metz Magic 1, Stack ‘Em Flat 2 Mercy Rule 3 Isadel 4.

Many punting systems get reviewed at this time of the year but you can’t do much without a good bank. Luxbet are helping out big time.

What last week’s heats of the Group 1 $107,500 Brisbane Cup (520m) showed was there is not a lot between the finalists.

While Spring Gun ran the quickest in 29.98 sec, only one hundredth of a second separated three other heat winners Radley Bale, Glen Gallon and Dyna Tron in the 2011 Brisbane Cup.

TABsportsbet have Dyna Tron and Bekim Bale equal favourites at $2.75 for the final.

This is despite Bekim Bale running the slowest heat in the 2011 Brisbane Cup.

There were genuine excuses for that performance.

Namely he was having his first look at Albion Park and suffered interference at the first turn.

Giving leader Mercy Rule at least four lengths coming to the home turn, Bekim Bale mowed that consistent bitch down in the final stride.

Tom Dailly, husband of trainer Andrea, says Bekim Bale is a wide runner and the fact he has drawn five in the final may not be such a disadvantage.

While Dyna Tron ran the quickest first section in the heats, it was Spring Gun who ran the quickest second section.

The fastest final section is harder to gauge as that time is based on the first dog past the marker and not the eventual winners final section time.

However that honour would surely go to either Bekim Bale or , He Knows Uno.

Both made many lengths in that final section.

Brisbane Cup (in box draw order and TABsportsbet betting) :

The late Bogie Leigh was a great race bitch, a fine brood bitch but more than anything part of the Les and Sandi Bein family.

At 10 years and seven months the family pet died last week and Bein is grateful to his bitch.

‘’We are still grieving. It’s been a huge loss,’’ Les Bein said.

‘’No human being has given us as many thrills as Bogie Leigh did.’’

‘’She raced virtually injury free for her whole career, except for ligament damage in a knee.

“And it was that part of her body where she got cancer that took her life.’’

‘’It’s not as if she suffered for a long time.

“Up until about three weeks ago, she was still spritely and running around the yards with puppies.

“But she started limping and we had it looked at and that revealed bad news.

“She couldn’t be saved.’

Bein is reluctant to single out a career highlight for Bogie Leigh.

‘’What was really special is that, in her four group one wins, she just didn’t win, she destroyed her opposition on each occasion,’’ he said.

Bogie Leigh won the 2003 Sapphire Crown at Sandown, 2003 Brisbane Cup , 2004 Australian Cup, 2004 Golden Easter Egg.

‘’The Australian Cup was a huge thrill because we were actually confident that night,” Bein said

“And the way the Melbourne people embraced her was something I will never forget.

“What is also special is that her earnings of $488,335 is still the highest figure for a bitch in this country.’’

While Bogie Leigh won the 2003 Brisbane Cup, she was out to become the highest earner in Australian greyhounds history back in the same race in 2004.

Trained by Tony Brett she was out to break Rapid Journey’s $530,995.

Bogie Leigh’s was $52,000 short and the Cup first prize was $55,000.

Bogie Leigh was the favourite but Malfoy proved too good.

Malfoy, spoilt the night of Queenslanders that night, but made up for some joy when producing Dashing Corsair, its great sprinter/stayer National champion.

Malfoy was trained by Christine Oldfield in NSW who is out to win the Cup again in 2011 with Vic Peters winner Spring Gun.

Brett has Iso Octane and Glen Gallon, the Bein’s have Bogie King and Bogie Beltah.

Yes life goes on but it won’t be the same without Bogie Leigh.

TRAINERS’ LAST WORD: – Sandown Park – 9.57pm (EST)

SHEREEN BALE “She is one of the best female sprinters in the land at the moment, and is probably my best chance of winning this race. She’s possesses good early speed and I’m expecting some improvement from her” – GRAEME BATE $2.80

NUMERO UNO BALE “He’s a dynamic chaser who is getting on in age but he has hit some excellent form in his recent runs. He needed to be drawn near the rail to have any chance so to come up with box 2 is a tremendous bonus” – GRAEME BATE $8.00

ENRY WALT “This will be his last race. He’ll give it his all, but realistically he is likely to struggle from box 3. He has made 14 group races and won $250,000 in prize money so I am very proud of him” – GARY ENNIS $26.00

BEKIM BALE “People say he was lucky to win his heat after finding the lead very late, but he still ran the quickest time of the night [29.28sec]. He needs room in the first 30 metres and if that happens he’ll be hard to stop” – ANDREA DAILLY $3.10

BALA BALE “She ran 29.38sec in her heat win which shows she’s fast enough to match the other finalists. But she is inexperienced so she will need to begin like a rocket to have any real chance of winning” – ANDREA DAILLY $16.00

ALLEN ELROY “He doesn’t like being crowded but if he has room to move he can mix it with the best of them. He broke the [513m] track record at Traralgon earlier this year and is back to his best form” – GRAEME BATE $16.00

DYNA TRON “He has never raced better. He had always been the type of dog that needed to lead to win, but lately he has become a lot stronger and he came from behind to win the recent Geelong Cup” – ANDREA DAILLY $3.10

DYNA MORRIS “He’s so consistent. He’ll be the outsider of the field but he’s not without a chance. Based on his times, it’s not as though he’s 15 lengths behind the rest of the field, so you just never know” – ANDREA DAILLY $51.00

Tonight’s Ipswich Cup heats preview

Eight heats of the Group 3 Ipswich Cup will be contested tonight with Surfin’ Steffi in heat two the early scratching.

Heat 1:

The best dog is the Tony Brett trained Glen Gallon (box 8).

His problem is that he is not a flash beginner but Brett is happy enough he has drawn to miss trouble.

He is also field smart so given an ounce of luck – he looks tough to beat.

Mercy Rule (box 1) has class but not a great record at Ipswich. He has the box to show his best.

Night Shivers (box 4) on the other hand goes best at Ipwich having won five of ten starts at the track witj a 30.72 best.

Jack Swagger, Alota The Best, Sneaky Spirit and Beilpajah Power, the latter beating Glen Gallon when they met last start.

Verdict: Glen Gallon, Night Shivers, Beilpajah Power.

Heat 2:

Two dogs possess class in this heat and who have shown liking for Ipswich are Matilda’s Charm and Bogie King (box 3).

The later has done it on the bigger stages having won the National Derby and running third in the Topgun at The Meadows.

Matilda’s Charm however has a lightning 30.44 to her credit at Ipswich and has drawn (box 1).

She had no luck when third to Magic Control last start after early trouble and possesses to the speed to lead and win.

Diamond Sparkles just keeps on improving but has only had one start at this track for a second to Kenny’s Karma back in June – He ran the equivalent to 30.85.

Undoubtedly he has improved since but he is meeting two good ones here.

Honey Lass likes this track more than others. She has won three races here with a best of 30.52.

Verdict: Matilda’s Charm, Bogie King and Honey Lass.

Heat 3:

Isadel is a classy bitch who has a particular liking for Ipswich.

The Christina Apap trained bitch has won five of six at the track has a best of 30.60.

She is very good when she can lead but has fast beginners Maybe Elite (box 4) and Special Premier (box 7) either side which may make that task a little tougher.

Maybe Elite at her best would be a force in this race.

She had her first start since August last week at Albion Park and ran on well after a slower than usual getaway.

While she has won two races at Ipswich she hasn’t raced over the 520m here.

Here’s To You (box 1)is the other greyhound with lots of talent. With a 30.56 best at the track from three wins in five starts here, he should be included in everything.

His flaw is slow starts but the class in this race drops away quickly and he is likely to get the room desired to give it his best.

Verdict: Isadel, Here’s To You and Maybe Elite.

Heat 4:

Iso Octane is aiming for nine wins straight but hasn’t raced since July.

His trainer Tony Brett believes he might tire near the end as he is 85%-90% fit.

What has aided Iso Octane in his wins has been his quick getaways.

All those wins have been at Albion Park and he has his first race start at Ipswich tonight.

The obvious class runner and still the one to beat.

Ifs and Butts and Time Will Tell can pounce of any sign of weakness.

Time Will Tell is especially talented but gets behind and works through packs.

Ifs And Butts is four from four at Ipswich and is back in top form after winning at Albion Park in 30.36.

That is a great record here considering he has only won 11 of 45 all up.

Magic Control is in great form and is a winner of three starts at the track.

He hasn’t converted those wins into great times but might tonight judging by his recent efforts.

Iso Octane is obvious but vulnerable at this stage.

Verdict: Iso Octane,Time Will Tell, Ifs And Butts.

Heat 5:
The Selena Zammit trained Sobbing Destiny (box 8)was been good for quite a while until her past month.

But there are good reason here why she can bounce but to her best.

Box eight is the best alley she has had for quite a while – in fact good boxes have rarely come her way having had 28 starts for one start from the red and only two previous starts form the pink.

Her winning asset is her early speed and she has won 12 races courtesy of that early ping.

Happily the daughter of Bond is also an Ipswich lover.

She has won twice at the track in three starts and has recorded 30.64.

Ghost Citi (box 7) excels at this track having won six of 11 starts over the trip here. He is also quick early and has a slick 30.50 to his credit here.

If he holds out Sobbing Destiny he can beat her.

We could see early dash from Mr Premier (box 5) and Alota Courage (box 2).

Mr Premier can be hard to catch but on his night is most talented. He has won two from four over the track and distance and has a best of 30.56.

Pure Adrenalin ran to his best when a last start Albion Park winner in 30.15. He hasn’t particularly taken to Ipswich giving an edge to some of those mentioned above.

Verdict: Sobbing Destiny, Ghost Citi, Mr Premier.

Heat 6

Ghost Hawks brother Citi Hawk (box 5) is an especially good dog as he is quite a reliable beginner with a touch of class.

He was checked out of it last start at Albion Park but comes back to Ipswich where he has a very good record of seven wins from 12 starts and a best of 30.46.

He doesn’t do anything stupid in races but there is a danger to his outside.

Cousin Alfie (box6 ) can be a bit hot and cold but he likes to cross sharply to the fence which may cause Citi Hawk a worry if they clash.

Ray Burman’s dog Migaloo Magic (box 8) has only had nine starts and is still working things out but has plenty of ability.

He has already broken 30 sec at Albion Park and importantly has won both races at this track with a best of30.63.

This will be his first start from box eight.

Both Duffy (box 4) and Elliot Tee (box 3) are average beginners but possess talent.

Elliot Tee has only races at Ipswich once and was unplaced – he may be a risk we are prepared to take.

Duffy, the recent Lismore Cup winner, has won twice at Ipswich and has a best of 30.45.

That time came at just his second race start from his favourite box one.

Obviously there is more depth in this race than when winning his grade five but he certainly should be included in multiples.

Verdict: Citi Hawk, Migaloo Magic, Duffy.

Heat 7

This heats has at least two classy dogs.

It was this time last year when He Knows Uno was an emerging talent who ran third in the Cup final before going on to win the Brisbane Cup.

The path is the same and just to show how far he has come he started in the Topgun when fifth to Allen Harper last start.

The Meadows was never really going to be his track for the slow beginner with the big finish.

He Knows Uno (box 4) has won here in 30.54 and is simply too classy to dismiss.

Bogie Beltah’s best time here is not far away in 30.58 sec. What is most pleasing about this bitch was her last start win at Albion Park, a track she hasn’t particularly liked,

She flashed home along the rails to win in 30.26 suggesting she is in great form.

Honey Brass (box 5), Beilpajah Fire (box 6) and Mini Pod (box 7) have all got good Ipswich form, particularly Honey Brass but her box isn’t going to help much.

Nicely drawn here in two, she can stick to the rails again and undoubtedly will be in the finish.

Noir Warrior (box 8) has been a good dog but has never won a race from either box seven or eight.

Verdict: He Knows Uno, Bogie Beltah, Honey Brass.

Heat 8

If a market was set up for the winner of the final Cold Fusion (box 1) would be close to leading it despite the fact the has never raced at Ipswich.

He has broken 30 secs at Wentworth Park and Albion Park more than once and is racing in top form.

Last Saturday he had no luck in the Vic Peters Final at Wentworth Park but never gave up the chase.

In truth box eight was never going to suit him but the red does, right down to the ground.

He has won three of four starts form the alley and despite being a slow beginner looks the one to beat in the final heat.

Red Rocket’s (box 4) past two runs will tell you a lot about this dog lately. He won at Albion Park in 29.91 then ran last behind Isadel who recorded 30.51.

He can win this heat at his best and the good sign is that he is two for two at Ipswich.

What might disturb him tonight is that Spindle (box 3) is quick early and may not let him get that cushy lead that he strives.

Kenny’s Karma and Hail A Mail go best at Ipswich.

Kenny’s Karma having won six of his nine starts at this track. Hail A Mail four of eight at the track.

They lack the true class of Cold Fusion and Red Rocket but given luck can get amongst it.

Super Surfer (box 8) has always had plenty of talent but seems to invent trouble when none seems lurking.

Maybe from out wide on this track he will get a bit of luck.

Verdict: Cold Fusion, Red Rocket, Super Surfer.
