Composure on top of ability was needed to win the 2011 Ballarat Cup (450m) when a blackout delayed the final last night.

A local power shortage saw finalists go back to their kennel after already parading.

It mattered little to the placid Up And Away who took it in her stride and placed a second Group 2 event on to her resume.

The Graeme Bate-trained bitch started juicy odds at $6.60, bounced straight to the lead before being headed by bolter Lektra Express.

Race favourite Cape Hawke moved into gear from box eight and worked to the outside of Up And Away before the winner made her move.

Cape Hawke’s box eight hoodoo continued having now had three starts from the alley for little result.

Up And Away collected the $40,000 first prize and added the Group 2 2011 Ballarat Cup to her Group 2 Great Chase and Group 1 Laurels victories.

Already the highest prize-money earner of the 2011 Ballarat Cup final before the race, she stamped her class and moved money earned to $179,450.

Up And Away defeated Lektra Express with Bala Bale sneaking up for third – Cape Hawke made up the first four.

“I knew the electricity problems that the track was experiencing wouldn’t faze her at all because she’s such a placid dog, so I was just trying to stay nice and calm”, owner Anne Sinnott said.

“She is the star of the show tonight and she has had her problems in the past but Graeme has got on top of them.

“He told me that he would keep trying until he got back on top which he has.

“It’s great to return to the top level of racing.”

Cape Hawke on the back of his brilliant 2011 Ballarat Cup heat win is early favourite for tonight’s 2011 Ballarat Cup Final (450m).

The Jamie Ennis-trained dog has drawn box eight for the final after posting 25.17 sec in the heat.

It was three lengths quicker than any other heat winner but there is a slight snag to this apparent ‘over the line job’.

While Cape Hawke has won from every other box he has jumped from, he hasn’t won from the pink.

In two starts, the best he could muster is a third, albeit behind former topliner Enry Walt.

At his first attempt from the box Cape Hawke began poorly at the Meadows and never recovered.

Cape Hawke can do that though more times than not he gets it right.

At his second and latest start from the pink he led but was beaten over three lengths by Enry Walt.

Any other 2011 Ballarat Cup runner probably wouldn’t have done much better against Enry Walt.

Cape Hawke’s pink box record is a niggling worry without being a turn off.

Cape Hawke in 18 starts to date has never drawn box one, which is a tad unlucky given his record from the inside is extra good.

He has won five races from box two from five starts.

So can Cape Hawke be beaten?

The short answer is yes but he has an undeniable chance.

Andrea Daily has three 2011 Ballarat Cup finalist Bala Bale, Lektra Express and Dyna Steal.

The best of these appears to be Bala Bale who won a heat of the recent Melbourne Cup.

The 25kg bitch had to settle for sixth in the final behind kennelmate Dyna Tron.

She then won her next two starts at this track.

Her heat win was in 25.42.

She is drawn to nearly lead and when she does that she is hard to run down.

Interestingly enough she has never jumped out of box two in a race though is undefeated from box three and has won one and placed in two runs
from box one – inside boxes suit her.

Bala Bale, Mungo Man and Cape Hawke have all had two starts at Ballarat and remain undefeated.

Mungo Man is trained by Victorian Hall Of Famer Allan Britton who hasn’t won a Ballarat Cup.

It looks unlikely this son of Where’s Pedro will change things around.

All his wins have been from inside and outside boxes but nothing has come from the middle.

He hasn’t won from boxes 3, 4, 5 or 6. They have mustered just three third placings in 11 starts.

Mungo Man is slow early and is likely to be at the tail which makes it tough in such a quality field.

Marmion has won from every box and it ran the quickest first section from last week’s 2011 Ballarat Cup heat winners.

One trainer who has had a great year and should never be under estimated is Graeme Bate.

The master trainer has Up And Away jumping from box three in the final.

It has won its past three starts leading all the way and has won three of four starts at Ballarat.

Its best time at the track of 25.23.

That says it has all the ingredients to be the 2011 Ballarat Cup winner.

Breckenridge has to be respected from box one.

From six starts, it has only missed a place once from the alley in six starts.

His heat win from box six was solid.

He does like to use a bit of the track but may be added in the multiples.

2011 Ballarat Cup field, form and ratings.

1-BRECKENRIDGE (trainer, J Frusher) (26:7-8-7); Box 1 record (6-2-2-1): Can be risky from start but has an overall time good enough to be competitive. Big odds but worth including in multiples. Heat time 25.40 Rating 6.

2-BALA BALE (A L Dailly)(13:7-1-2): No starts from box two: Quick early, undefeated at Ballarat, in good kennel. Small bitch and wouldn’t want any interference. Heat time 25.42 Rating 8.

3. UP AND AWAY (G J Bate) (43:15-7-8): Box 3 record (4:1-1-1): Won past three starts. Won three of four at Ballarat, Very quick early, won most prizemoney, trained by the master. Heat time 25.42 Rating 8.

4. LEKTRA EXPRESS (A L Dailly) (55:14-10-4) Box 4 record (3:0-1-0): Usually not a great beginner but led last week. Still ran the slowest heat time in 25.66. Poor record from this box and looks covered by opposition. Rating 2.

5. MUNGO MAN (A J Britton) (33:8-5-4): Box 5 record (5-0-0-2): Slow early, poor record from the box. Won both starts at the track to date with heat time being its quickest. Needs luck. Heat time 25.44. Rating 4.

6. MARMION (J G Coburn) (59:26-9-9): Box 6 record (11:3-1-2): Won seven of past eight starts. Ran the quickest first section last
week, marginally. Won three of five at this track. Second quickest heat time. Form just too good to dismiss. Heat time 25.35. Rating 7.

7. DYNA STEAL (A L Dailly): Box 7 record (1:1-0-0): Average beginner. Won three of six at this track. Has a best time here of 25.13.
Working up a good record and certain to have admirers. Rating 6

8. CAPE HAWKE (18:11-0-3): Box 8 record (2:0-0-1): Fastest heat winner. Working up a good record. Generally quick early. Yet to win form box. Likely to start short and definitely can win. Rating 8.

Reserves. Autoamerican and Wongawilli Wala have been scratched.

TIPS: BALA BALE 1 Cape Hawkes 2 Up and Away 3 Marmion 4.

While 77-year-old trainer Allan Britton has won many races, the $40,000 first prize Group 2 2011 Ballarat Cup isn’t one of them.

On Wednesday a belated chance comes his way via 2011 Ballarat Cup outsider Mungo Man.

The Greyhound Racing Victoria Hall of Fame inductee hasn’t trained a group winner since Bear Creek won the Geelong Cup in 2002.

“I only train two or three dogs at a time these days as I find it a bit tiring,” Britton said.

“To make the final of this race is something I really didn’t expect.”

Britton’s own ‘litter’ have followed the lead of their father. Robert, Jeff and Linda Britton are all top trainers in their own right and will be cheering loud for their father.

“I’ve had a lot of Ballarat Cup runners over the years but have never won the race before”, Britton said.

“However, I have won four Geelong Cups, two Warrnambool Cups, a Horsham Cup and a Warragul Cup, plus I’ve had four 2nds in the Melbourne Cup and a 2nd in the Australian Cup.”

The fastest of the 2011 Ballarat Cup heat winners was Cape Hawke in 25.17sec, three lengths quicker than any other heat winner.

Drawn box eight, the Jamie Ennis-trained greyhound is sure to the 2011 Ballarat Cup favourite.

“Cape Hawke is beautifully drawn and some of the others aren’t, so he’s near enough to a good thing,” Britton declared.

Mungo Man has box 5 in the final.

“He’s got enormous ability,” Britton said.

“He came from virtually equal last to win his heat and I had actually given up on his hopes.

“But he showed what he can do, and unfortunately he doesn’t show that sort of form often enough.”

Britton praised Mungo Man’s owners, Colin and Matthew Morris.

“I have trained a few dogs for his owners over the years and every dog they have given me has had plenty of ability,” Britton said.

“They do a great job rearing their pups and deserve a lot of the credit for Mungo Man.”

The Jamie Ennis-trained Cape Hawke stamped his authority on next Wednesday’s Group 2 2011 Ballarat Cup (450M) with the fastest heat time last night.

A winner of 11 of 18 starts, Cape Hawke jumped out of box four and ran 25.17 sec, clearly the fastest time.

It was his second visit to Ballarat, his first in August resulting in a 25.67 sec win.

That night he missed the start and worked through the field.

Last night he bounced straight to the lead and gave nothing else a hope.

His time was the equivalent to three lengths quicker than the next best heat winner.

That honour went to Marmion in 25.35 sec.

Most of the other heats winners clocked in around the 25.40s.

Cape Hawke has drawn box eight in the final.

The son of Where’s Pedro is yet to win out of the pink.

He has had two starts from the box at Sandown Park.

The first time he bombed the start.

The most recently time he did well when third to Enry Walt in 29.41 sec when beaten 3-1/2 lengths.

Andrea Dailly took training honours by preparing three of the eight heat winners - Bala Bale, Lektra Express and Dyna Steal.

The most eye-catching performance of the night belonged to Mungo Man.

Trained by a legend of the sport and Greyhound Racing Victoria Hall of Famer Allan Britton, Mungo Man came from the rear of the field to win his heat in the solid time of 25.44sec.

He is not the greatest beginner at any time and has drawn poorly in box five in the final.

The speedy Bala Bale looks nicely drawn in two.

Last Wednesday night Ballarat was home to the Neverfail Springwater Final (550m).

The race saw the odds-on favourite Eastwood ($2.40) win four and a half lengths ahead of Elsie Kings’ Slipaway George with Wadelock Tiger a further one and a quarter lengths back for third.

The Geoff Mitchell trained winner came home first in a time of 31:33 seconds and was the youngest dog in the race. It was another impressive run for Eastwood who ran the fastest qualifying time in the heats. The final win on Wednesday night brought his career record to five wins from ten starts.

Runner-up Slipaway George exited from box seven and brought his usual consistent performance to the competition.

Another dog that was highly fancied for the race, the Gary Mannion-trained Ringwood Bale, failed to fire coming in a highly disappointing last place. It was a far cry from his fast finishing second in his qualifying heats the week before, as his inside draw of box three proved too difficult.

Other quality events held at Ballarat Wednesday night (28th October) included the Accredited Distributors Final (390m) won by Yankee Flyer and the Petstock Animal Supplies Final (550m) won by Atomic Voodoo.

Monday night saw the heats of the Group 2 Neatline Homes Shepparton Cup (450m) take place, with the quickest qualifying time of the night going to the sensational sprinter Din’s Son with 25.04 seconds in Heat 2, just outside of the 450metre track record of 24:82 seconds set by Slater.

The win has secured the Karen Leek-trained Din’s Son with a start in his first group race final and should ensure he starts the $27 000 to the winner event as the clear favourite, especially after drawing the favourable box one.

Other heat winners from Monday night progressing onto the finals include Gardam Prince (25.20s), Remo Rubik (25.58s) and Heat 4 winner Alotta Mojo (25.24s), trained by Wayne Vassallo provided last year’s Shepparton Cup runner-up.

Gardam Prince, winner of Heat 1, is the last remaining hope for trainer Darren McDonald to claim a Shepparton Cup since 1998 when he won with Ashigga, after his other heat entries Go Go Allegro and True Kihael failed to qualify.

Gardam Prince now boasts 23 wins from 32 career starts and will go into the finals with an impressive CV that includes Group 2 Warranambool Cup runner-up to Hanify’s Impact.

In-form trainer Geoff Mitchell continued his string of success in Heat 3 when his runner Remo Rubik claimed victory. Remo Rubik is a two time Group 2 winner and will provide some stiff competition in the final.

The Shepparton Cup final will be held Saturday night, October 31.
