Hutchinson Eyeing 2014 Winter Carnival Cup Success

Despite likely to leave as a rank outsider at Albion Park on Thursday evening, trainer John Hutchinson is confident of a polished performance from Winged Elite in the Winter Carnival Cup over 520 metres.

One of the more lightly-raced greyhounds leading into the Winter Carnival Cup, Hutchinson believes Winged Elite will be a chance if able to overcome box 6 early.

“He is a bit slow on the outside,” Hutchinson said.

“If he can start well and work his way to the rail, then I think he has a rough chance.

“There are so many good runners in this field.”

The slowest qualifier for the Winter Carnival Cup final, Winged Elite faces a tough task in nine classy rivals, particularly in recent Queensland Derby champion Flash Reality who is boxed by trainer Tony Brett.

“The box eight (Flash Reality) and the box one dog (Awesome Project) will be tough to stop,” Hutchinson said.

The grandson of renowned trainer John Reimer, Hutchinson is hopeful Winged Elite holds the key to a long and prosperous career in greyhound racing, with the 2014 Winter Carnival Cup figuring as his first appearance in a Group final.

“I’m very excited, but I’m nervous as well,” Hutchinson said.

“You invest a lot of time into the sport and it’s great when you get something out of it.

“My grandfather doesn’t have much to do with the tracks now but he is coming along to watch. So are my mum and dad.”
