Gatt Chasing Success with 7 in 2014 Golden Easter Egg

Trainer Mark Gatt is eyeing a maiden Golden Easter Egg title in 2014 and is offered legitimate chance, having confirmed seven runners for this Saturday’s Group 1 heats at Wentworth Park.

Claiming three major Group titles since December, Gatt secured the Group 2 Richmond Derby via exciting sprinter Red Road most recently, and is confident in his chances of continued success in the Golden Easter Egg despite drawing the somewhat awkward box 6 for his heat on Saturday night.

“He’s got the speed to overcome and as long as he comes out well he should be fine” Gatt told GRNSW this week.

“You only have to run in the top three to make it through to the semi-finals and if he can’t do that the he probably doesn’t deserve to be in it.”

One of four to have progressed from the Richmond Derby through to the 2014 Golden Easter Egg, Red Road is the only runner not to have contested a lead-up run prior to this Saturday’s major event.

“All of them are spot on for this series” Gatt said.

“The four that were in the Richmond Derby final (Boyce Road, Ritza Raider, Ritza Ryder and Red Road) came through that series well.

“All of them except for Red Road have had at least one run between then and now and they look solid.”

Arguably facing the stiffest competition having been confirmed in heat six alongside in-form runner There’s A Earn, Gatt is confident Ritza Hattie has the skill to progress through from the first round.

“Ritza Hattie has had a good break of about six weeks since the Futurity Final” Gatt said.

“In the Futurity final she had a really bad draw in box eight with a wide runner on her inside which stuffed her, but she’s go the draw here and she should run well.

“Red Road and Ritza Hattie are my two best chances again but all of them have a shot if they’re on the money.”

In order of how they will contest their respective heats, Gatt will box Ritza Raider (heat 2), Gradence (heat 3), Mexico City (heat 4) Ritza Hattie (heat 6), Boyce Road (heat 7), Red Road (heat 9) and Ritza Ryder (heat 10).

“None of them have any excuses with the box draw except for Red Road but he has the speed to overcome it, and being a three week series they only have to be in the placings to progress” Gatt said.
