Rich Races Return To Tasmanian Greyhound Racing

Tasmania is set to see a return of its most profitable races this Saturday.

The state will be home to The National Sprint and the Distance Championships at Elwick racecourse in Hobart on the weekend.

It will be the first time the race has been run in Tasmania for 25 years.

Greg Faye, a greyhound racing expert, feels that the race day will draw huge crowds to the course.

“It’s an annual event in Australia, and rarely do we have two finals as good as this anywhere in Australia, but to have them in Hobart on the one day, and the drawcard dog of Australian greyhound racing Miata here, it’s a big day for Tasmania,” Faye said.

Champion greyhound Miata will grace the track at Elwick this Saturday in the 2012 Wrest Point National Distance Championship.

Run over a distance of 709 metres, the Distance Championship 2012 is worth $113,500 in prize money.

Trainer Paul Stewart understand that it was an unexpected decision to travel Miata to Hobart, however, believes he is making the right call.

“I know a few people have questioned it, but she loves being home. She is a great traveller, but she doesn’t like being away from her home,” Stuart said.

“To keep her at her happiest, I feel this is the best route for her.”
