Oaks Road Wins 2012 Gold Cup At Maitland Showground

Oaks Road has proven that he can overcome all obstacles by winning the Group 2 Gold Cup at Maitland Showground in his most recent start.

The talented greyhound jumped from box eight in the feature race, causing critics to doubt whether he could continue his impressive winning streak.

Oaks Road was caught out wide from early on due to his wide draw, however, was able to pull it together to score a narrow victory ahead of Sudden Splash, who finished second, and Buck Fever, who ran home for third.

Trainer Mark Gatt was thrilled with the result, which secured him an impressive $40,000 in prize money.

“It was a really good run,” Gatt said.

“He got caught out wide, like we thought he would, and he just stayed out there and did all he could do.

“He held on and then took off down the straight, he was basically too good in the end.”

It was the first time Mark Gatt had attempted win a Gold Cup, giving him a strike rate of 100%.

Oaks Road is now expected to head to stud at the end of the year after having a Melbourne spring racing carnival campaign.

He is expected to be as valuable as a stud as he has been on the track.

“Any Group race win is a really big thrill, actually, any race win is a really big thrill,” Gatt said.

“It was good to get the win, especially before we put him to stud.”
