Soho Max has National Derby date

The ever improving Soho Max has earned a shot at the Group 1 National Derby at The Gardens after an impressive display at Albion Park on Thursday.

The Glenda Dart-trained youngster stopped the clock in the best of the night 30.06 sec.

What was perhaps especially pleasing about the win was that the son of Bombastic Shiraz-Runya Beach broke 5.80 for the first section.

It is something he has failed to do in the past.

His usual powerful second half kicked in and now the Northern Rivers trainer is heading south.

“That’s clinched it,” said John Dart husband of the trainer.

“He had to run that sort of time for us to contemplate a trip to the Gardens for the Derby.

“We’ll take him there for a trial first.

“He’s very strong but this is the first time he has begun that well.”

Soho Max came out of the seven box and was up on the outside of the leaders at the winning post the first time.

Soho Max won by five and a half lengths over Cousin Alfie with four lengths to Alota Courage in third.

It was his ninth win in 20 starts.

The Group 1 $75,000 first prize National Derby (515m) is run from January 20 to February 3.

It is open to dogs whelped on or after July 1 2009.
