2011 Sale Cup – preview, comment, ratings and tips

NSW trainer Jason Mackay has a strong hand in the Group 1 $75,000 first prize Sale Cup Final (650m) on Monday with two qualifiers Kinga Zac and Zipping Lad.

The half-brothers have drawn next to each other in boxes seven and eight, alleys that have been successful to both in the past.

Zipping Lad is likely race favourite after running the quickest heat in 37.42 at his first look at the track.

One suspects he can improve on it but on heat times the son of Malfoy and On Catra will have a battle.

Six of the finalists, on times, are within two lengths of each other but that doesn’t include Kinga Zac.

He recorded the slowest time in 35.70 sec.

Zipping Lad recently won both the Group 3 Summer Cup and Newcastle Cup in recent weeks and has claims of being named NSW greyhound of the year.

In the heat he defeated tearaway leader Mystic Apple.

That dog was having his first start at Sale over the trip and ran 37.53.

This son of Hallucinate is likely to lead the field again from box three, the alley from which he has won six races.

One would think Mystic Apple will be stronger over the trip a second time and he could easily take the 2011 Sale Cup.

Shimaguni is back in form but has drawn awkwardly in box six.

Last week all eight finalists settled either first or second in the run and the two front positions in this race may determine the outcome.

Trainer Len Ketelaar will be hoping for a 2011 Sale Cup scratching to get Granduer into the field.

The first reserve made good ground after a slow start when third to Zipping Lad in last week’s heat when a close $3.40 second favourite.

Granduer is good enough to win the final if he gets a start.

  • 2011 SALE CUP FINAL – field, comment, ratings and tips

  • #1 Kinga Will (P Giles): Won last week’s heat in 37.45 when he led with a first section of 6.21. Can be a bit hit or miss from the boxes though he excels from inside draws. Rating 7.
  • #2 Lasting Effect (N Tait): Won his heat from box one last week in 37.45 when he lead. The open section was run in 6.22 sec. Versatile and good from most boxes. Won both starts at this track. Likely to be big odds but not hopeless. Far from it. Rating 7.
  • #3 Mystic Apple (V Awramenko): Ran a top race when taken in the straight by Zipping Lad in last week’s heat. Ran 37.53 with a first section of 6.04 sec. Has the speed to lead again and can take advantage of any trouble behind. Rating 7.
  • #4 Lektra Jay (A Dailly): Quick out when led from box five and run down by Shimaguni. That was his first try over 600m here. Ran 37.55 with an opening 6.16 sec. Will be better for the hit out and in the yard that wins lots. Rating 6.
  •  #5 Knocka Knows All (J Thompson): No match for Lasting Effect last week when ran 6.2 to the first section and 37.62 to the line. Box makes it tough and tend to go with others. Rating 3.
  • #6 Shimaguni (R Redenbach): Won past three starts and is experienced in finals. Ran 37.53 after an opening 6.24 sec. Box makes it tough but in with an eachway chance. Rating 6.
  •  #7 Kinga Zac (J A Mackay): Consistent dog who was well beaten in heat last week running 35.70 and the first section in 6.24 sec. His time was the slowest of the finalist including the reserves. Others with an edge. Rating 4.
  • #8 Zipping Lad (J Mackay): In top yard and ran the quickest heat time in 37.42 after an opening 6.29 sec. Boxed to be able to work towards the lead and stay out of trouble. Form too good to dismiss. Rating 8.
  • #9 Granduer (L Ketelaar): Made good ground in the heat running 37.56 and a first section of 6.48. Plenty of class and can win. Rating 7.
  • #10 Karanji (A Langton): Handy type ho ran 37.64 last start and an opening 6.41 sec. Likely to find these too good. Rating 3.

Tips: Zipping Lad 1 Mystic Apple 2 Kinga Will 3 Lasting Effect 4.
