2011 Ipswich Cup – trainers’ view and ratings

Group 3 Ipswich Gold Cup (520m) – 8.49pm Queensland time – tonight.

  1. Sobbing Destiny (Mick and Selena Zammit):  Heat winner in 30.66.  Mick Zammit says the inside box is ideal for his bitch – in fact she needs it there more than any other track.  “It’s only at Ipswich,” Zammit said.  “At Albion Park she goes straight to the first turn, but at other tracks she heads to the inside.”  Strengths: Quick early, loves Ipswich. Weaknesses: Slightly off boil. Others with quicker times. Rating 7/10
  2. Alota The Best (Dan Bloomfield):  Heat winner in 30.57. “The time doesn’t surprise us, The track is on fire,” said Jason Bloomfield, brother of the trainer. “He is absolutely on fire at the moment. He ran 22.74 over 395 metres at Albion Park a few weeks ago but then stepped up to 520m a bit quickly at Albion Park last week when he ran fourth. That run has obviously improved him. He is a dog who can take a lot of work and just keeps improving.” Strengths: Very quick early, loves Ipswich. Weaknesses: Slightly weak final stages of 520m.  Others with quicker times. Class factor. Rating 5/10
  3. He Knows Uno (Mick Patterson):  Heat winner in 30.56. Patterson is abit worry how well He Knows Uno is going. “He did it hard (the heat win),” Patterson said.  “He’s got me stumped. I thought he might go a bit quicker. I believe his run to get second in the Corporate Challenge final last year (at Ipswich) was one of the best runs he has ever put in.” Strengths: Powerful finish. Well boxed, rails. Plenty of class. Rarely runs badly. Goes well at Ipswich. Weaknesses: Slow early. Needs luck through a field. Rating 6/10
  4. Cold Fusion (Neil Falls): Heat winner in 30.25. Fastest heat winner at first look at the track. “I’ll have to switch tracks more often with him,” Falls joked. “The quick beginning didn’t surprise me.  He has already run a 5.67 at Albion Park and 5.39 at Wentworth Park. But he doesn’t always do it. I just hope he can do it in the final.” Strengths: Quickest heat time. Very strong finale, Ooozes with class. Weaknesses: Can miss the start, needs a clear run through the pack. Rating 8/10
  5. Matilda’s Charm (Bob Giltinan): Heat winner in 30.34. She won her heat from box one.  “The one alley was a huge bonus,” Giltinan said about the heat. “She is flying, boxes don’t worry her and she likes Ippy. It is a red hot field. Obviously it would have been better from box one but I am hopeful. Strengths: Quick early, loves Ipswich. Strong finale. Weaknesses: Small bitch drawn between two big dogs. Quick beginners drawn in boxes one and two. Poor box. Rating 8/10
  6. Duffy (Maurie McArdle) Heat winner in 30.74. “He  is lucky not to be retired,” McArdle said He had carried a problem in his off-side leg just above his wrist and no one could find it. Finally a crack was found and my advice was to give him six weeks off.  We did that and on return he has been in great form. He carried that problem for a long time,” McArdle said. Strengths: In great form. Likes Ipswich. Weaknesses: Slow early. Slow heat win. Poor box.  Rating 3/10
  7. Here’s To You (Peter Ruestchi): Heat winner in 30.92. “This his fourth feature final,” Ruetschi said. He hasn’t had any luck in feature races he’s been in,  He is probably looking for middle distances but he is being kept to this trip with the Brisbane Cup series in mind. “I hope for a bit of luck, he’s due, the outside box suits him well.” Strengths: Powerful finale. Likes room out wide early (good box). Loves Ipswich.  Weaknesses: Slow early. Average heat time. Rating 4/10
  8. Magic Control (Tom Noble): Heat winner in 30.40. Magic Control  has improved greatly over the past month. “He’s won two top grades at Albion Park and paid $17 and $13 and tonight he’s paid $11,” Noble said.  “I’ll have to start having more confidence in him. This is his track. He loves the place. I am afraid he will get caught wide from this box as there is a lot of speed on his inside but if he gets around the first turn he will be right in it. Strengths: Can jump quicky,  loves Ipswich, drawn well, quick heat time, in top form. Weaknesses: Can be risky early, plenty of speed on its inside. Rating 7/10.
