2011 Melbourne Cup – Bekim out, Shareen in – bookmakers

The $290,000 Group 1 2011 Melbourne Cup box draw has been unkind to the favourite Bekim Bale but it is likely to matter little to owner/breeder Paul Wheeler.

Wheeler bred seven of the eight finalists with each in his ownership or that of family.

Paul owns four – the Bales – Shereen Bale, Numero Uno Bale, Bekim Bale and Bala Bale.

His wife Jan owns Allen Elroy while their son Brendan owns Dyna Tron and Dyna Morris – and just for good measure Dyna Bert, the first emergency – the second emergency Allen Harper has been scratched.

The other dog in the final is the experienced Enry Walt, owned and trained by Gary Ennis at Sandhurst.

Bookmakers had Bekim Bale as short as $2.00 after the heats on Thursday night prior to the box draw.

He was quickest of the heat winners stopping the clock in 29.28.

TABsportsbet have Bekim Bale out to $2.70 for the 2011 Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park after he drew four on Monday.

The only chink in the armour is that he is not brilliant early and from the squeeze box it could spell trouble.

Shereen Bale has been the big mover after drawing the red and is into $2.80 from double figure odds.

She has the speed to lead and has won four of seven from box one.

Dyna Tron, in box seven is into $3.20 after winning his third race in a row in the heat in 29.31.

He was strong on the line but needed a tad of room early to gather speed – he may get it in the final againwith Dyna Morris (box 8) not quick early.

While it may not matter much to the Wheelers, it does to the trainers.

Graeme Bate stands on a record three Melbourne Cup winners alongside Darren McDonald.

The latter has no runners but Bate has Shereen Bale, Numero Uno Bale and Allen Elroy.

Numero Uno Bale ($9) looks nicely near the rail. He is slowish early but can finish on while Allen Elroy (box 6) looks the value runner at $15.

The box isn’t great but he has early toe and on his heat win in 29.36 can win the final.

Andrea Dailly has Bekim Bale, Bala Bale, Dyna Tron and Dyna Morris – she also has the reserve Dyna Bert who was courageous in running second to Bekim Bale last week beaten a length.

Bala Bale (box 5, $13) gave nothing else a chance in the heat when leading all the way but it can be hit or miss at the start – she is the youngest greyhound, 24 months.

Just 24kg, she will need to lead or goodnight.

Bookmakers have Enry Walt at $26 to win the final.

The winner of $250,000 is the biggest dog in the field at 38kg.

That prizemoney is more than any other dog in the race.

The 2011 Melbourne Cup will be his 14th Group race final in 65 career starts.

While he would be better suited drawn wider he did win his heat from box three in 29.41.

It is hard but not totally impossible for the big black dog.
