Mr. Metz Wins Controversial Macro Meats Megastar – Horror Run for Elite Blue Size

The Ron Ball-trained Mr. Metz snuck in with a classy all-the-way victory in the Group 2 Macro Meats Megastar Final (520m) at Dapto on Thursday night, taking home the $25,000-to-the-winner first prize despite controversy surrounding his success.

Queenslander Mr. Metz ($5.50) flew out of box five and lead all the way to defeat gallant outsider Certain Magic ($38.20) who shortened the margin to just half a length after a speedy finish, with Fedex ($8.90) a further length away in third after gaining a run on the rails, but questions are being asked about the winner’s eligibility.

The race was marred by the disappointing last place finish for hot favourite Elite Blue Size ($2.30) who was caught up right up the start never recovering the lost ground, and the fall of Lovin’ Spoonful mid-race.

Post-race celebrations were also interrupted after it was discovered Mr. Metz had weighed in 2.5kg over his last recorded weight at kennelling.

Unique circumstances allowed steward’s to take control and allow Mr. Metz to start under Greyhound Racing Rule 20 (3), but there has still been plenty of complaints from the connections of the dog’s Megastar rivals.

Mr. Metz (Bond x Iza Tora) has now won 14 of his 20 career starts, including his Group 3 Dapto Maiden victory last season and his maiden Group 1 victory in the Brisbane Cup.

The great greyhound betting action continues on Saturday night with two group races decided at The Meadows as the finals of the Group 1 Maturity Classic (525m) and the Group 2 AWM Distance Championship (725m) take place.
