Thursday Night’s Big Dog Cup Preview

This Thursday night Brisbane’s Albion Park will light up with the $15,000-to-the-winner final of the Group 3 Big Dog Cup (600m) featuring a star studded field of some of the nation’s very best dogs.

Last week’s qualifiers produced a top-quality final field headlined by the four heat winners Next Top Model, Dashing Corsair, Velocity Regina and Reign Over Me.

Sure to start as the pronounced favourite on Thursday night’s decider is the Dwyer Lennon-trained champion Queenslander Dashing Corsair. The red fawn son of Malfoy was the fastest winner from last week when he stormed home to an emphatic 12 ½ length victory in a sizzling 34.68 seconds.

Despite the big win Lennon was still disappointed that Dashing Corsair hadn’t been able to break the 600m Albion Park track record on the night. The time he ran was the third fastest on the track, the record being 34.57s set by Oreo in 2004.

Dashing Corsair has drawn ideally for the final with box one and is definitely the dog to beat considering he has an imposing record of nine wins and three placings from 13 starts wearing the red rug.

The second fastest heat winner from last Thursday was Velocity Regina, who took out the third heat 4 ½ lengths ahead of the hot favourite Flash Of Light in a sharp 34.95s in her debut 600m run. The Tony Brett-trained bitch has drawn awkwardly for the final in box five, a box the daughter of Surf Lorian is yet to win from. But, with victories in the Group 2 Queensland Futurity and the Group 3 Flying Amy Classic already this year, Velocity Regina is still a strong hope.

The other two heat winners were Next Top Model and Reign Over Me, and both have claims on Thursday night.

Jason Thompson’s classy bitch Next Top Model is also from boom sire Surf Lorian and is drawn ideally on the far outside in box eight for the final. She has never missed a spot in the top three wearing the pink rug, and is the best Place bet of the field. Thursday night will be Next Top Model’s 12th Group race final, the talented runner having recently won the Group 1 Sandown Cup.

The final heat winner, the Darren McDonald-trained Reign Over Me, has also drawn well for the final in box two. The four-year-old son of Bond has won four of his six starts from box two, and is another excellent Place bet.

The Big Dog Cup will jump at 9:10pm as race eight at Albion Park on Thursday night. Featuring so many stars it is definitely worth a punt on, so check out the odds at today!
