WA Derby Preview – Cohen Bale the Favourite

This Saturday night the group greyhound racing action moves over to Perth when Cannington host the $35,000-to-the-winner final of Group 2 Brittons WA Derby (530m).

Open to the best male greyhounds whelped on or after January 2008, the WA Derby features a brilliant line up of dogs that made it through last weekend’s qualifiers.

Sure to start as the hot favourite is the Andrea Dailly-trained Cohen Bale. The son of Big Daddy Cool was the only favourite to win their heat last Saturday night when he went out at $1.70 to claim an emphatic 7 ¾ length victory ahead of Hallpack Jack from box six.

In the final Cohen Bale has drawn far better with box two and if he gets away well will be very hard to chase down, especially if he reproduces his speedy 30.34 from the qualifiers, the quickest time of the night.

The David Hobby-trained Hallpack Jack, who ran second to Cohen Bale, has also drawn well and will jump from the inside box on Saturday. Despite the good draw, the son of Hallucinate had the same alley last week and was well beaten. Still a good chance for a Place.

There were a number of upset wins in the heats namely that of $21.40 chance, the well-bred son of Bombastic Shiraz, Khafra. The John Edwards-trained Khafra went out and claimed a surprise win ahead of the $1.40 favourite Pedrosa in the heats after pulling out a career best performance running a sharp 30.44 from box seven. He has claims again as he has drawn the same alley for Saturday, but is more likely a Place bet.

The consistent Pedrosa, half brother to Cohen Bale, will jump from box six. Although beaten by Khafra in the heats, the Paul Stuart-trained Pedrosa has a solid record in WA only missing out on a top two place once in eight starts. If he jumps well Pedrosa will be one of the biggest dangers.

Our best bet suggestion is to box in Cohen Bale, Khafra and Pedrosa in a trifecta through Ladbrokes.com.au.

The 2010 WA Derby is due to jump at 8:37pm as the fifth race on the night’s bumper 13-event card. Get the best odds on the Derby and all the other great races at Cannington on Saturday at Ladbrokes.com.au!
