2010 Sandown Cup Final Field & Preview

On Thursday night the next exciting Group 1 greyhound race and the richest staying race in Australia is set to take place when Sandown hosts the final of the $100,000-to-the-winner Group 1 Radio Sport 927 Sandown Cup (715m).

After last week’s heats eight star stayers have made their way into the final, which boasts one of the most open fields in years. All eight dogs have a very real chance of Group 1 glory on Thursday night, including the Graham Bate-trained Jarvis Bale.

The veteran runner and reigning National Distance Champion, who will be competing in his 79th career race and ninth Group race final for 2010, was the fastest heat winner from last week when the son of Sonic Flight ran a flying 41.95 over the 715m to secure a three and a half length win ahead of Countess Of Cork.

If Jarvis Bale can replicate the speed and get a good start he will be hard to beat in the final, but his chances are marred slightly by his box three draw. The November 2006 whelp has won only one of his six starts wearing the white rug.

A win will see premier Lara-based trainer Bate walk away with his first Sandown Cup success while Jarvis Bale would be the second successive dog to take out the National Distance Championship – Sandown Cup double following Mantra Lad’s success in both races last year.

The bitch Jarvis Bale beat in the heats, the Darren McDonald-trained Countess Of Cork, has had her finals chances boosted by drawing ideally on the rails. But despite the advantage of jumping from box one and her impressive late bursts, she looks slightly outclassed here with so many other top chances.

The second fastest dog from the qualifiers was the brilliant Satanic Cash, who is likely to start as the odds-on favourites on Thursday night as he attempts to win his maiden Group 1 race.

The promising South Australian dog trained by Bob Isaacson was impressive when he overcame his awkward box six draw to snare a sharp 42.10 win ahead of the favourite, Reign Over Me.

Satanic Cash has drawn the same box for the final and is sure to put in a gallant effort, especially appealing for a Place bet. He faces some far stiffer competition than in the heats and so to replicate his last-to-first win will be a tough ask.

Runner-up to Satanic Cash last week, Reign Over Me is the second dog from the kennels of mentor Darren McDonald who is going into the final after being beaten by one in the qualifiers, alongside Countess Of Cork, as McDonald also aims for his maiden Sandown Cup win.

Reign Over Me will jump from the opposite side of the field than his rails-drawn kennelmate, set to start from box eight.

The two other heat winners from last week were half-siblings Next Top Model (42.28s) and Allen Zander (42.15s), both from boom sire Surf Lorian.

This Thursday night in the final exciting bitch Next Top Model has drawn box seven as she races in her 11th Group race final. Next Top Model ran fifth in the Cup last year, and should improve on this after competing in 30 more races in the last 12 months.

Meanwhile the Andrea Dailly-trained Allen Zander is in-form and looks a good chance despite his awkward box four draw, a box that has produced just one Sandown Cup winner over the races’ 24 year history.

Allen Zander is coming off three good runs over this track and distance, his fastest back in April when he ran a scintillating 41.94, and could be a surprise winner if he finds the front early.

Punters and racing fans can catch the exciting action of the Sandown Cup at 9:40pm (VIC time) on Thursday night when the final runs as race eight on the night’s cracker ten-event card that also includes the $10,000 Macro Meats Cup Night Stayers (715m) featuring the likes of Allen Shaul, Lochinvar Vogue and Dashing Corsair who is also the first reserve in the Sandown Cup.
