Tonight’s 2010 Sandwon Cup Heats

Tonight at one of Victoria’s premier racing venues, Sandown Park, four hotly contested heats for the next Group 1 greyhound race, the $100,000 to-the-winner Radio Sport 927 Sandown Cup (715m) will take place.

A collection of some of the nation’s elite stayers will fight it out to qualify for the lucrative final due to be held next Thursday night, May 13.

Heat 1:

In the first heat, which is one of the most open of the four, the up-and-coming Bling It On (box seven) is likely to start as the favourite coming off three successive wins and boasting a very speedy 42.04 personal best here.

Other classy runners in the opening heat include the Darren McDonald-trained Reign Over Me drawn ideally out wide in box eight, star South Australian runner Satanic Cash (box six) and Our Toyman (box two).

Heat 2:

The second heat stars recent AGRA Run of the Month winner Nellie Noodles, the super consistent Robert Britton-trained The Meadows (600m & 700m) and Shepparton (650m) track record holder drawn ideally on barrier one.

Nellie Noodle’s biggest threat is likely to come from Grahame Bate’s veteran runner and National Distance champion Jarvis Bale in the pink rug, but if Nellie Noodles gets an early lead the impressive black bitch will take a lot to catch.

Heat 3:

Heat three boasts another star-studded field featuring the likes of Pure Inspiration, Allen Shaul and speedy bitch Next Top Model.

The Darren McDonald-trained Pure Inspiration is a consistently impressive son of Pure Octane who ran an eye-catching second at this track over 595m last week. Hasn’t had a start at this distance before so will be interesting to see how he goes in his staying debut. Is drawn in box six and if he gets away well has the ability to lead all the way.

Surprise winner of the Lizrene Classic last month Allen Shaul, trained by Andrea Dailly, boasts the fastest personal best here and did extremely well to outrun Satanic Cash after starting as the $22.70 underdog. Has run a scintillating 42.06 at this track and distance and with the ideal box two draw looks a good chance.

Heat 4:

The fourth and final Sandown Cup heat is less open than the others, with one dog sure to start as the hot favourite, Queenslander Dashing Corsair.

The Dwyer Lennon-trained veteran is coming off a sensational couple of runs in Brisbane, but is having his first start at the Sandown track since November last year.

Dashing Corsair though is in-form and drawn ideally on the rails and is definitely the dog to beat.

Other classy dogs with claims that may put a challenge to the favourite include Symmetry having their first start from box eight who has a sensational record at this track and distance having won twice here in their past three starts, and another from the kennel of Darren McDonald, Guacamole jumping from box seven.

The Sandown Cup heats, worth $5250 each to-the-winner, are scheduled to run as Race 3 (7:44pm), Race 4 (8:08pm), Race 5 (8:28pm) and Race 7 (9:11pm).
