Elite Blue Size Wins 2010 Maitland Gold Cup Beating Miss Peru & Pulp

Last night the brilliant Reg Kay-trained speedster Elite Blue Size claimed a sensational all-the-way win in the Group 2 J&H Air-Conditioning Gold Cup Final (450m) at Maitland, securing the $25,000-to-the-winner prize for his connections.

A son of Elite State out of Size ‘Em Up, Kay’s kennel-star Elite Blue Size began the sprint feature as the hot $1.80 favourite and lived up to all expectations as he coasted to a two length victory ahead of roughie Miss Peru ($17.30), with another long-priced runner Pulp ($13.50) a further two and a quarter lengths back for third after sneaking up on the inside.

Chief Relief ($7.50) ran a gallant fourth just a neck away after sitting third throughout, followed by the second favourite at $6.40 Little Sparkle. Defending Maitland Cup champion Magnifique ($10.30) finished well back in seventh and was never a chance.

In an impressive display of pace, National Derby champion Elite Blue Size ran a scintillating 24.93s over the 450m, shaving .01 of a second off his near record-breaking qualifying time from last week and just missing out on Account’s 24.92s record.

Little Sparkle was first out of the boxes but Elite Blue Size quickly went hard and fast to the front to secure an early lead. Miss Peru soon secured second position, having a beautiful run behind the leader as Elite Blue Size maintained his front running position cruising to victory.

Thursday night’s win was the blue dog’s third Group success already this year, as he puts in early claims for the 2010 NSW’s Greyhound of the Year.

His other big wins this year were in the Group 1 National Derby and the Group 2 Gosford Gold Cup.

Whelped in February 2008, Elite Blue Size now boasts a truly imposing winning strike rate of 77% after saluting in 17 of his 22 career starts, including an unbeaten seven from seven at the Maitland track.

Also held at the Maitland meeting last night was the $4000-to-the-winner Maitland Mercury Gold Cup Consolation taken out by The Mark Davidson-trained bitch Shirl’s Magic, as the hot favourite Outa Credit faded to finish last in the seven-dog field.
