Assistance Needed fol Goulburn Facilities

Media Release: GRNSW

Greyhound Racing New South Wales (GRNSW) has requested support from local and state

governments to help fund a redevelopment at the Goulburn Greyhound Racing Club.

A new kennel block and judge’s tower are required at the Goulburn greyhound racing track with the entire project to cost an estimated $945,000.

The Goulburn greyhound track is currently a Non-TAB racing venue which conducts 40 meetings per year. The Board of GRNSW is committed to the upgrade of facilities across NSW but the cost of this redevelopment exceeds the current capacity of GRNSW alone.

GRNSW Chairman Professor Percy Allan AM said the Board of GRNSW has no other choice but to ask for assistance from local and state governments to complete the project.

“The Goulburn City Council had previously indicated their willingness to support the project in part as it forms part of their long term plans for a larger redevelopment of the site,” Professor Allan said.

“For the greyhound facilities we will be asking the Goulburn City Council and the NSW State

Government to share in providing the cost of the redevelopment with each chipping in a third of the cost. GRNSW will provide a third and also cover any over-runs on the original costing.

“GRNSW warned the NSW State Government and Racing Minister Kevin Greene last year that their refusal to implement the Cameron Review’s recommendations meant that greyhound racing would be denied the opportunity to generate extra income needed to undertake large scale renewals of physical assets that have reached their use by dates at regional tracks.

“The Minister and Government’s decision to ignore our pleas on funding reform now means we have no choice but to go cap in hand to both the Council and the State and ask for assistance to enable one of our country greyhound tracks to stay open,” Professor Allan concluded.
