Friday’s Richmond Derby Heats Preview

This Friday night, March 5, three elite heats for the Group 2 World 4 Pets Richmond Derby (535m) will take place at Richmond ahead of the $25, 000 to-the-winner final next week on March 12.

A number of brilliant sprinters are engaged in the series and in heat one star contenders include Tyson Magic drawn ideally on the rails, the super consistent Swift Fancy in box three who has won four of their past five starts, Michael Cope’s speedy Reign Over Me back from a spell in box four and last-start winner Patch Up Job in box five.

The Michael Abbot-trained Tyson Magic had an outstanding win at Richmond last week where he beat home the highly fancied Goodesy.

Cool Flight, winner of last year’s Derby, is also engaged in the opening qualifier and will jump from box seven.

The second heat of the night features a trio of impressive dogs in the inside three boxes with Affroman in box one, the Stephen Lambley-trained Clark No Ee resuming racing in box two and last start winner Droopy’s Fool in Box three.  Drover and Snozz starting from boxes seven and eight respectively are also quality dogs in the second qualifier.

Promising super sprinter Goodesy headlines the field in the third and final Richmond Derby heat. The John Finn-trained Cyril Rowe Gold Plate winner has drawn ideally in box two and will be hard to catch here. He has a brilliant record at Richmond, having won three of his four starts at the track. Classy rivals that may put up a solid fight include Group race winner Magnifique in box three and Bogie Brave on the far outside in box eight.

A half-share in the speed machine that is Goodesy, who is on his way to the $250, 000 Macro Meats Golden Easter Egg, was sold to Sam Cauchi this week for a hefty figure in excess of $200, 000.

The 2010 Richmond Derby heats are scheduled as races five (8:40pm), six (8:58pm) and eight (9:40pm) on Friday’s bumper ten-race programme that also includes two semi-finals of the $10, 000 Globe Memorial Super Maiden (535m).
