Bellbird Park Wins GRNSW Country Challenge Armidale Cup

On Saturday night the latest GRNSW Country Challenge event played out, with the Mathew Reid-trained Bellbird Park taking out the Hardmans Armidale Cup (520m).

Starting as the second favourite at $2.50, Bellbird Park beat home Devine Rush ($5.50) by two and a half lengths with Eagleton Lad ($13) in third.

It was a devastating finish for the odds-on favourite Devine Ruler ($1.60), kennelmate of the runner-up Devine Rush, who came in dead last.

Devine Ruler ran the fastest heat time of 30.44 but failed to fire in the final following a minor injury, putting a major dent in his Golden Easter Egg campaign.

It was a hectic and fast paced race with Bellbird Park running a blistering 30.27sec over the 520m sprint feature, shaving an incredible amount off her 30.58sec winning heat time.

Bellbird Park, a daughter of Surf Lorian, has now won 12 of her 30 career starts. Saturday’s win was her first lot of points in the GRNSW Country Challenge series, while the seven points Devine Rush’s second place finish earned has elevated the dog to fifth overall with 13 points.

Tadmore Buckshot leads the way with 26 points followed closely by Future Fund on 24 and Mighty Albert on 22.

The next leg of the 2009/10 GRNSW Country Challenge series will be the Potts Park Cup (530m) on Saturday night.
