Drill ‘Em Wins Zoom Top

On Saturday night The Meadows hosted a truly elite race night that included the $30 000 Group 2 Macro Meats Zoom Top, where Drill ‘Em claimed an upset win ahead of a field of Australia’s finest stayers.

Drill ‘Em ($7) beat home South Australian chaser Satanic Cash ($3.20) by 2.75 lengths with the Graeme Bate-trained Jarvis Bale ($9.80) a further 0.75 lengths back for third.

Odds-on favourite Next Top Model ($2.70) ran a gallant fourth 5 lengths back from the surprise winner.

It was only a seven dog race following the scratching of the brilliant Mantra Lad the morning of the race.

Andrea Dailly’s Headley Bale got away well from box five and set the pace early on while Drill ‘Em ran strongly up the inside securing second position out wide.

Coming up to the first turn Next Top Model made up some ground fighting with Drill ‘Em for second position behind the leader, before eventually dropping back giving the spot to Drill ‘Em.

Heading into the back straight Headley Bale held a comfortable 3 length lead ahead of Drill ‘Em, but the  eventual winner soon chased down the pacemaker grabbing the lead and was first around the final bend before pulling away for the win – his fourth from five starts at The Meadows.

The winning son of Texas Gold and Geoff’s Mate has now won 13 of his 34 career starts, including an imposing three Group finals in the past six months.
