True Kihael Wins GRNSW Orange Cup

Last Saturday night, January 23, True Kihael claimed a devastating all-the-way victory in the latest GRNSW Country Challenge event, the Orange Cup at Bathurst’s Kennerson Park.

Prepared by Lidsdale trainer Kim Hyde, True Kihael started the race as the $1.50 favourite and lived up to the hype beating home his rivals by an imposing 6 ¼ lengths. The Ashley Lamb-trained Hot September ($3) came in second a length ahead of the unexpected third placegetter Rapid Unit ($9).

Trainer of the runner-up, Ashley Lamb also had Your Show Jake engaged in the race, the $4.50 chance coming in fourth.

Meanwhile the Simon Ma-trained Tadmore Buckshot has sprung to the top of the GRNSW Country Challenge ladder after placing sixth in the Orange Cup. Tadmore Buckshot has now competed in five Country Challenge finals this season and the points he earned on Saturday saw him surpass the previous leader Future Fund by two points.

The winning son of Trewly Special ran a brilliant 30.06 over the 520m sprint in what was his third successive victory. True Kihael now boasts a record of 20 wins from his 37 career starts for an impressive winning strike rate of 54%.

A former Group 1 winner, True Kihael also proved his versatility with the boxes on Saturday night, winning from box one after previously showing favouritism to the wider draws. He will now be aimed at the Bathurst Gold Cup.

The next leg of the 2009/10 GRNSW Country Challenge will be the Armidale Cup (520m), heats running on February 13 before the final on February 20.
