2009 GRV Greyhound of the Year Finalists

The three finalists for the coveted 2009 Victorian Greyhound of the Year have been selected and announced, and the top dogs are Cindeen Shelby, El Galo and Velocette.

18 greyhounds were nominated for the prestigious award, now in its 36th year, before a panel of greyhound industry experts narrowed it down to the three outstanding finalists.

Multiple Group 1 winner Cindeen Shelby, the daughter of boom sire Bombastic Shiraz,  has had a sensational 2009 season, winning 13 of her 22 starts for the year bringing her career record to 26 wins from 45 starts.

For 2009 the speedy red fawn bitch took out four Group status races at four different tracks: Group 1 Paws of Thunder (520m) at Wentworth Park; Group 1 Topgun (525m) at The Meadows; Group 1 Sapphire Crown Classic (515m) at Sandown Park; Group 2 Black Top (515m) at The Gardens.

On top of her impressive victories she also ran fourth in the Group 1 Winter Carnival Cup final and was a finalist in the Group 1 Brisbane Cup.

El Galo

The star son of Where’s Pedro was a dual Group 1 winner in 2009, claiming victory in the Group 1 Adelaide Cup (515m) at Angle Park and the Group 1 Temlee (525m) at The Meadows.

But it is not just the prolific blue dog’s Group wins for 2009 that was so impressive, but the sheer number of Group finals he placed in. El Galo was runner-up in the Group 1 Australian Cup and the Group 2 Wangaratta Cup. He also came third in the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg and the Group 2 Bob Payne Winter Stake, as well as making the final of the Group 2 Warrnambool Cup.

Velocette, who shares the same sire as fellow GOTY finalist Cindeen Shelby, also had a fruitful year in 2009. Trained by one of the country’s leading trainers Graeme Bate, the black dog won five Group races last season: the Group 1 Australian Cup (525m) at The Meadows; Group 2 Horsham Cup (480m) at Horsham; Group 2 Gold Coast Cup (520m) at Albion Park; Group 3 Perth Cup Consolation (530m) at Cannington; Group 3 The Shootout (515m) at Sandown Park.

He also was runner up in the Group 1 Topgun and Group 3 Silver Bullet, placed sixth in the Group 1 Winter Carnival Cup, Group 1 National Sprint Championship and Group 2 Traralgon Cup, and came fifth in the Group 2 Wangaratta Cup.

The Victorian Greyhound of the Year will be announced on Friday, February 12 at the GRV Industry Awards Night gala at the lavish Crown Entertainment Complex.
