Gardam Prince Wins Devonport Cup

On Tuesday afternoon classy Victorian sprinter Gardam Prince claimed a smart victory in the $25 000 Group 3 Dowling McCarthy & Hankook Tyres Devonport Cup (452m) at the Northwest GRC.

The warm favourite at $1.90, Gardam Prince beat home long-priced elect Rulla Shaw ($29) by three lengths with the second favourite trained by Mick Stringer, Topline Doovee ($3), finishing an extra ½ a length back for third.

Rulla Shaw, who claimed an upset win ahead of Eagle Eye in heat six last week to qualify for the final, proved they were deserving of their spot when finishing a gallant second.

Stringer’s other runner Cradock Park ($9.30) was the second fastest qualifier but had a shocking time in the final after drawing awkwardly in the middle, coming in dead last after previously winning their last four starts in succession.

Gardam Prince, trained by Darren McDonald, ran a sharp 25.68 over the 452m group feature, just .02 of a second outside his sensational heat time of 25.66.

The win bought Gardam Prince’s record to 30 wins from 42 starts.

The consolation event (race three) was another exciting affair with the $2.40 favourite Stylish Monty defeating Eagle Eye by 3 ¼ lengths with Super Joe Cool just a neck back in third. It was a stylish comeback for the winner who was scratched from last year’s race.
