Saturday’s Association Cup Final Preview – Mantra Lad Hot Favourite

This Saturday night at Wentworth Park a quality line up of dogs are set to contest the richest staying race in NSW, the $50 000 to-the-winner final of the Group 1 Hotham Body Repairs Association Cup (720m).

The Graham Jose-trained Mantra Lad looks the one to beat in the final having secured the rails alley. The highly qualified son of Pure Octane has an impressive 47% strike rate over his 53 career starts, and is coming off six successive victories.

Winner of the 2008 National Distance Champion, Mantra Lad is a definite stayer with much ability having won ten of his 23 wins at a distance of 700m or more. He also boasts an impressive best time of 42.09 at this track and distance, which he set when winning heat two last week.  The $50 000 to-the-winner first prize on Saturday will bring Mantra Lad ever closer to catching up to career stakes record holder Rapid Journey.

Sure to bring some stiff competition is Graeme Bate’s super consistent black star Jarvis Bale and the dog that beat Jarvis Bale in the heats, National Sprint Champion Dashing Corsair from Queensland.

Dashing Corsair, trained by Dwyer Lennon, definitely prefers the inside boxes, having secured 16 of his 27 career wins jumping from one of the first three boxes. For the Cup on Saturday night he starts beside Mantra Lad in two, and it will be a fight between the Victorian and the Queenslander for the lead early on.

The Hotham Body Repairs Association Cup final is scheduled as race eight on the night’s cracker ten-race programme and will commence at 9:45pm (NSW).
