Thursday’s Hobart Thousand Final

Punters and spectators are revving up for this Thursday night when the Hobart Greyhound Racing Club hosts the final Group 1 race of 2009, the coveted Wrest Point Casino Hobart Thousand (461m).

As always, this historical and much loved race is set to be an intense and exciting affair as a field of eight elite dogs fight it out for the lucrative $75 000 to-the-winner prize in an all-interstate event.

Melbourne Cup finalist, the Robert Britton-trained Prankster who took out heat six last week in stylish fashion ahead of Tasmanian Gold Cup winner Disintergrate, has the inside running on Thursday night drawing the rails. Meanwhile the Charlie Gatt-trained Disintergrate has drawn wide with box seven and will have to work hard to cross the field and take an early lead, which is his only chance of claiming success here.

Currently heading the betting markets is the ever-consistent and flying in-form Silent Guardian, the Darren McDonald-trained champion drawing well with box three. Silent Guardian qualified the fastest in last weeks’ heats, claiming a sensational eight-and-a-half length victory in a blistering 26.04 seconds, and if the odds-on favourite can pull out another run like that this Thursday night, only bad luck will stop them from winning.

Cranbourne trainer McDonald is also represented in the final by Ultra Rumble starting beside his kennelmate in the unlucky draw of box four. Ultra Rumble managed to defeat his rivals in heat four last week in his first look at the Elwick track, and so now with a bit of track knowledge and experience he should not be overlooked.

Another dog to watch will be Ruth Matic’s Hurricane Luke, who took out heat one last week. The New South Wales runner only ran a modest 26.47 to take out the heat, but boasts the best time at this track of all the dogs, a sharp 26.00, and has drawn ideally in box two for the final.

And top Victorian trainer, Graeme Bate will be looking to snare himself the final Group 1 race of the decade with his talented runner Gripen Bale and add some success to what has been a nightmare month for Bate. Gripen Bale claimed a stellar victory in heat two last week and has drawn box six final. This speedy runner has displayed impressive form of late, winning three of their past five races and was runner-up in the other two, and so has the class to overcome this wide draw and take out the title as long as he doesn’t meet any interference.

The Wrest Point Casino Hobart Thousand is scheduled as race eight on the club’s cracker 10-race programme and is scheduled to start at 10:08pm (TAS time).
