Mr. Metz Wins Brisbane Cup

Thursday night at Albion Park the talented Mr. Metz took out the last Group 1 feature in Brisbane for 2009, the Sky Racing Brisbane Cup (520m).

Trained by Ron Ball, Mr. Metz ($3.50) collected the $55 000 to-the-winner prize after claiming a narrow victory just a neck ahead of Dashing Corsair ($7.00) with Barry Morris’ Side Cutter the same margin back in a fast finishing third.

Mr. Metz (Bond x Iza Tora) finished in 30.11 seconds after leading all the way from the box five, the same box last year’s winner El Galo jumped from, an impressive effort especially considering the dog had injured his off-side front leg just one day before taking out the Group 1 feature.

The victory bought the dog’s record to an imposing 10 wins from 13 race starts and after recovering from his noticeably sore leg Mr. Metz will begin preparation for next month’s Group 1 National Derby.

It was a devastating dead-last finish for the odds-on favourite at $2.50 Cindeen Shelby. The disappointing run likely to affect the Kel Greenough-trained bitch’s chances of winning the Australian Greyhound of the Year award.

Other notable victories on Thursday night at Albion Park include Banzai Pipeline’s strong win in a 520m 5th Grade after the son of Surf Lorian x Crossword Lizzy missed out on a start in the Brisbane Cup by one-hundredth of a second. While the other highlight of the night was the Brisbane Cup Consolation (520m) won by Christine Robartson’s High Earner.
