St Pierre Wins St Leger

Wednesday night the Christopher Nutt-trained St. Pierre claimed an upset victory in the Group 3 Woy Woy Poultry St. Leger (515m) at The Gardens.

Punters and spectators were given the shock of the night when the second longest-priced dog, St. Pierre at $29.40 defeated its rivals in the feature group race including runner-up, another outside chance, Gnarley Boy ($22.10), by three-quarters-of-a-length. Brett May’s Bit Stressed ($10.40) was the same length back again in third.

St. Pierre (Surf Lorian x Paris St Germain) clocked 30.05 seconds over the 515m event after making the most of his inside draw, running along the rails in a lead-all-the-way victory. The ideal draw and the winner’s impressive speed proved a lethal combination. It was the perfect revenge for St. Pierre, who was well beaten by seven-and-a-half lengths in his heat by Elite Blue Size after getting stuck with box eight.

It was a disastrous night for favourite-backers with the two shortest-priced runners, the Reg Kay-trained Elite Blue Size ($2.70F) and Robert Smith’s Lochinvar Marlow ($2.80) finishing fifth and last respectively. The fastest heat qualifier Lochinvar Marlow was previously undefeated but he never made up the ground after a delayed jump from box five.

St. Pierre now boasts five wins from his 12 career starts and may be considered for next month’s National Derby as the St. Leger is considered the ideal lead-up to the Group 1 event at the same track.
