Brisbane Cup Heat Results & Next Thursday’s Final Field

Last night Albion Park at Brisbane hosted the heats for the Group 1 Sky Racing Brisbane Cup (520m) to determine the final field of classy sprinters for the highly anticipated $55 000 to-the-winner final.

Heat one was won by the odds-on favourite at $1.30 and triple group one winner, Kel Greenough’s Cindeen Shelby (Bombastic Shiraz x Proper Shelby) in a slick 29.99 seconds. She defeated Banzai Pipeline ($12) by three and three quarter lengths with locally trained Black Attack ($4) seven lengths back from the winner for third. It was Cindeen Shelby’s first victory from three race starts at the track and bought her record to an impressive 27 wins from 45 starts. The Brisbane Cup final next week will be the speedy bitch’s last start before a short spell.

The second heat saw the Barry Morris-trained Side Cutter ($15) secure a narrow victory a mere neck ahead of the $2.20 favourite Dashing Corsair with Ryan’s A Rocket ($12) a further two and a half lengths back in third. Graeme Bate’s Dyna Forte came in a fourth, ruling the dog out of the final. Next Thursday night’s Brisbane Cup will be Side Cutter’s fifth feature race final.

Heat three was another close finish with the Ron Ball-trained galloper Mr. Metz ($6.50) winning in a sharp 30.05 seconds, three quarters of a length in front of Tony Brett’s Bogie Bomber ($3) with favourite at $1.40, the Christine Robartson-trained Higher Earner another length back for third. It was a terrific comeback for outsider Mr. Metz (Bond x Iza Tora) after his poor performance in last week’s Young Guns Final bringing his record to nine wins from 12 starts.

Vociferous ($8) gave punters a shock and Ron Ball his second Brisbane Cup finalist, coming in first in heat four, one and a three quarter lengths ahead of the $1.90 favourite and reigning Melbourne Cup winner Lord Ducal with Punk Platinum just a neck back in third. Jumping from box one proved advantageous for Vociferous giving him his sixth victory from nine starts at the Albion Park track.

The final heat of the night saw My Amigo ($4.40) lead throughout to claim an easy four and a half length victory ahead of Pure Surf ($4.60) with Tony Brett’s Velocity Force a distant third over eight lengths behind the winner. My Amigo clocked the fastest heat time of the night, a scintillating 29.93 seconds blitzing his previous best time of 30.05 and giving George Panopoulos’ dog his seventh win from 15 career starts. It was a disappointing run for the $2.70 favourite, Mighty Albert, who failed to fire in Queensland despite his brilliant southern form for a lacklustre seventh place finish.

The Group 1 Brisbane Cup Final will be held next Thursday night, December 10.
