Wednesday Night’s Ballarat Cup Heats Preview

Tonight Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club is hosting seven exciting heats of the Group 2 PETstock Ballarat Cup (450m).

A quality range of speedy dogs are set to contest the heats in anticipation of the $30 000 to-the-winner final on December 9.

It is an extremely strong series this year that includes many Group race winners such as the Group 1 Silver Chief & Group 1 National Derby winner Fedex coming up against Group 2 Geelong Cup victor Birthday Boy in Heat 6. They will have to pull out all the stops as also entered in heat six is the talented sprinter, the Darren McDonald-trained Timberland coming off two wins from his past three starts and blessed with the inside draw.

McDonald, aiming at his second Ballarat Cup after winning in 1992 with Wild Pirate, also has another three dogs running in tonight’s heats Danny Phantom will contest Heat 3 while Rev Limiter and Silent Guardian are the top two fancied dogs for Heat 4. The Cranbourne trainer’s fifth Cup hopeful, Go Go Allegro has been scratched from Heat 6.

One of the biggest stars of the series looks to be the Andrea Dailly-trained Dyna Lachlan fresh off a last start second place in the prestigious Group 1 Melbourne Cup. Dyna Lachlan will have the inside running in the night’s opening heat jumping from box one in the nine dog field following the scratching of Bet On Lee.

The Dailly kennel at Anakie are aiming for their third Ballarat Cup, following their wins with Knockabout Wok in 2002 and Magic Trance in 2005 and have a number of other runners entered in the series including Allen Chang and Manuel Bale coming up against each other in heat three and Mick The Mozz in heat seven.

Also in the line-up tonight are the past two Great Chase winners, Pharoah King (Heat 1) and Sheoak Ian (Heat 5). Coming up against the reigning Great Chase champion in Heat 5 is Zenith, Lara trainer Jamie Ennis’ best chance at back-to-back Ballarat Cup success following his sensational quinella in the race last year with Vee Man Vane and Mogambo. Zenith is in brilliant form coming off six successive wins.

The Ballarat Cup heats are scheduled to run from race three to race nine on tonight’s bumper 12 race programme with the first heat jumping at 7:40pm.
