Sheoak Ian Wins the Great Chase Final

Sheoak Ian yesterday afternoon took out the Group 2 Great Chase Final at The Meadows in a fantastic display of speed and excitement.

The $3.20 favourite clocked a slick time of 30.05s over the 525m final, defeating Digger Daley ($12.10) by three and a half lengths with Barnstormer a further length back in third. It was the third successive win for the Joe Borg-trained Sheoak Ian and bought his record to eight wins from 20 career starts.

The Scope Bendigo community group, tied to the winner, collected a much needed $5000 for the victory and will also receive 10% of Sheoak Ian’s prize earnings over the following 12 months, which is likely to be in the thousands. Riding for the Disabled in Warranbool won last year’s Great Chase with Pharoah King and were yesterday awarded with close to $7500, their share of the dog’s earnings over the last year.

Scope supply assistance and support to nearly 200 people in the Bendigo area with disabilities and since being assigned Shoeak Ian at the start of the series, have now earned $6500 from the dog’s achievements.

Melba Lara Court in Mt Evelyn received the $2000 runner-up prize for their matching with Digger Daley while EW Tipping Foundation in Ballarat won $1000 for Barnstormer’s third place finish.

All up the 2009 Great Chase series, now in its seventh year, has given away around $33 000 to 147 community groups. Donations and prizemoney were thanks to the series major sponsor Tabcorp.
