Tasmanian Gold Cup Final

This Thursday night the final of the Betfair Tasmanian Gold Cup (461m) will take place in Hobart in one of the state’s most anticipated and highly competitive races.

With such a tightly matched field of quality runners, the box draw has a lot of weight this race. Likely favourite going into the event looks to be Charlie Gatt’s Disintegrate. The NSW speedster ran a scintillating 25.97 in the heats to become the fastest qualifier, a sensational effort for his first time at the Elwick circuit. Disintegrate will jump from box seven for the final and Gatt will be hoping his runner can emulate his heat feat.

In last week’s heats Disintegrate beat home the Anthony Dawson-trained Stylish Monty by over six lengths, however, Thursday night’s final may not be quite as easy. The in-form Stylish Monty has drawn ideally with box eight giving the runner an advantage with his favoured start position. Box eight will also give the dog plenty of room to pull out his signature burst of mid-race acceleration that may just see him get to the line first.

Another fancied finalist is Butch Deverell’s Eagle Eye, the classy Tasmanian runner atoning for his poor previous form by blasting the competition in their heats from box one last week. Eagle Eye has drawn the inside running again for the final, and if the brindle dog can gain an early lead, he has the quality to win this trophy.

Starting from boxes five and six, Akka Boy and Little Spaniard have perhaps pulled up the worst following the box draw. Both dogs are known for their quick starts, but may find themselves held up in the middle this time, unable to break away quickly. The same goes for the lightly raced outsider Cardoc Park, looking unlikely to gain a clear run from the awkward box four.

Another long-priced runner is Overspeeding. The dog provided the shock of the night with their heat victory, but does not hold the same class as his competitors for the final and is likely to see early trouble with box three.

The $5000 to-the-winner Betfair Tasmanian Gold Cup Final is scheduled as race six on the bumper ten race programme for Hobart on Thursday night and is due to commence at 9:25pm (TAS time).
