Queensland Young Guns Heat Results & Final Field

Last Thursday night Brisbane’s Albion Park hosted six exciting heats for this year’s Young Guns series to determine the final field for the highly anticipated final, where eight of the state’s outstanding young dogs will battle it out for the title.

Heat one was taken out by Malcolm Dawson’s Gnarley Boy (Where’s Pedro x Suna Silence) in a scintillating 29.92 seconds in an impressive six and a quarter length victory ahead of Chasin’ Chloe with Unlucky Ginga just a neck back in third. Gnarley Boy blitzed his rival’s in the fastest qualifying time of the night.

The Tony Brett-trained Punk Platinum claimed victory in the second heat of the night in a sharp 30.04 seconds, easily defeating Perfect Student by five and a quarter lengths with Fence Post a further three lengths back in third.

Mr. Metz, winner of the Dapto Maiden Classic, reigned supreme in heat three, beating runner-up, Sandra Hunt’s Lilly’s Pride by one and a half lengths with Spring Our Ping in third. Mr. Metz (Bond x Iza Tora), trained by the prolific Ron Ball, won in 30.18 seconds but showed a slight lack of fitness when he tiered on the home straight. The victory bought Mr. Metz’s record to seven wins in his nine career starts.

The night’s fourth heat saw Pure Surf claim an all-the-way victory in 30.10 seconds, in the closest finish of the night, Hanson Petrie just a nose back for second. Unpainted was a distant third a further seven lengths back. It was a fantastic come-back for the Paul Cauchi-trained Pure Surf (Surf Lorian x Pure Subject), after the dog stumbled in his Ipswich Cup heat injuring his shoulder and putting him out of contention for both the Ipswich and Lismore Cups.

Heat five was won by Michael Brauer’s Golden Duck (Cromlah Bale x Signs Of Gold) in the slowest qualifying victory of the night, 30.33 seconds. Side Cutter was a length and a quarter back in second with Lady Diaz third. Golden Duck gave Mick Brauer his first Thursday night winner with the heat victory and took her record up to two wins and three seconds in six career starts.

The final heat of the night saw Convincing Talk win in 30.12 seconds, defeating Genuine by four and a half lengths with Dooley’s Gold in third. Thursday night’s final will be just the 16th race start for the Chris Riordon-trained Convincing Talk (Convincing Lee x Prize Pack).

The 2009 Young Guns Final (520m) is scheduled as race eight on Thursday night’s programme at Albion Park and is due to commence at 9:17pm.
