GRNSW Country Challenge – Goulburn Cup Heat Results

Saturday afternoon Goulburn was host to the heats for this season’s GRNSW Country Challenge Goulburn Cup (457m), with three sons of Sophie’s Belle from the booming Matic kennel claiming victory and moving on to the final.

Heat one was won by the one-turn track specialist Fact Or Fantasy in 25.92 seconds a neck ahead of Brady’s Wish.

Jumping from box six, the first of the Sophie’s Bell clan to claim victory Fact Or Fantasy  defeated an elite field of competitors, including third placegetter Fine Thought, who set the pace early on and held the lead up until the home turn.

Katie’s Tears claimed an emphatic five and three-quarter length victory in heat two ahead of Wild Regiment with Hill Top Sam a distant third. Katie’s Tears became the fastest qualifying dog going into the finals winning in a slick 25.41 seconds.

Heat two also saw Mighty Albert, the current Country Challenge series leader, fall at the first turn. With 22 points, Mighty Albert is sitting just one point ahead of Future Fund and was hoping to widen that lead on Saturday afternoon with a victory in the heats. Casualty struck when he suffered a hard fall but trainer Norm Beecroft has assured all that his star runner suffered no adverse affects.

The second contender from the Matic stable, Lorne Bowler won heat three in 25.85 seconds, two and a half lengths ahead of Shiney with Prince Eragon in third.

Youngster Lorne Bowler caused a massive upset after he jumped quickly from box one, diving into the rails. A fast shift out caused him to collide with race favourite Magnifique, fortunately maintaining his momentum to chase down eventual runner-up Shiney who held the lead at the start of the race.

It was a devastating finish for Magnifique however, the five-time Wentworth Park winning runner only managing to finish sixth after the interference.

The final heat of the night saw litter brother to heat one winner Fact Or Fantasy, Shamus O’Shaw, take out the top spot in 25.84 seconds ahead of runner-up Ozzie Hoots and third placegetter Budapest. It was Shamus O’Shaw’s third victory in four starts at Goulburn.

The Goulburn Cup final will be held this Saturday night.
