This afternoon Maitland will host the Belmont Veterinary Clinic 4/5 Grade Final (450m), which is set to be one of the best races on the NSW greyhound calendar this week.
Heats were held last Thursday night and three of the most promising young runners showcased their speed and talent proving they have strong racing careers ahead of them.
The Jason Mackay-trained Window Watcher took out Heat 1 in devastating style, defeating runner-up Lightning Shot by eight-and-a-half lengths with Zavance a nose back for third.
Window Watcher, the son of Whisky Assassin, recorded a sizzling heat time of 25.17, the fastest of the night, in what was only his fifth start. Window Watcher ran second on debut at Maitland and has backed that up with four successive wins at the track. He will jump from box five in the final tonight.
Myron’s Angel won the second heat in 25.64 two-and-a-half lengths ahead of Lou Lou Rambo with Fancy Devil coming in third. Despite her time leaving much to be desired compared to her rivals, she is the only dog in the final field that has taken down Window Watcher. This combined with the fact she has drawn favourably with the outside draw (Box 1) could give her a chance to fight back.
Heat 3 saw the 2008 Australian Trainer of the Year Reg Kay’s Elite Blue Size claim victory in a sharp 25.21 seconds, five-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Supersonic Cyril with Sicilian Wave a further one-and-a-quarter lengths back for third. It was the third consecutive victory for the speedy Elite Blue Size, and his fourth from only six starts.
The final heat of the night was won by one of the best youngsters around, Ruth Matic’s Hurricane Luke, who defeated runner-up Bear Yourself by four and three quarter lengths with Large Shot managing third. He clocked the second fastest qualifying time with 25.20 seconds, bringing his race record up to an impressive 12 wins from 19 starts, the last six in succession.
The Belmont Veterinary Clinic Final is scheduled as Race 6 on this afternoon’s programme due to commence at 5:46pm.
