Cindeen Shelby Wins Group 1 Topgun

Sprinting extraordinaire Cindeen Shelby has won last Saturday’s Group 1 Sky Racing Topgun (525m) to take home $100,000 in prize money.

The invitation-only event was held at The Meadows and featured Australian Cup winner Velocette in runner-up position and National Sprint Championship runner-up Dyna Lachlan in third place.

The win comes just after the champion bitch won the Group 1 Paws Of Thunder at Wentworth Park in Sydney on October 3 where she took home another $100,000 to trainer Kelvyn Greenough.

Based at Pearcedale, Greenough has been training Cindeen Shelby after she finished seventh in last year’s Topgun and could not be happier with the win.

Originally trained by father and son pair Ray and Deen Parkinson near Newcastle, the daughter of Bombastic Shiraz has now won a total of 23 out of 39 races with a total stake of $312,000.

Winning the race also means that Cindeen Shelby is just one of three dogs to win back-to-back Topguns and she is also the second female greyhound to claim a Topgun win in 17 years; the other victory goes to Mint Magic in 1999.

Starting from Box 2, Cindeen Shelby was outpaced by High Earner in the first leg of the race and trailed by two lengths.

Before the home turn, Cindeen Shelby angled to the inside and pushed past High Earner to drive clear to the finish line to end with 29.75 seconds, .10 of a second outside her previous best on the track.

Greenough’s pride and joy will now go on to race in next month’s Superdogs Series at Sandown Park where she will contest in the Group 1 Crown Classic Series and the Melbourne Cup Series.
