Gripen Bale Wins Geelong Gold Cup

Racing star Gripen Bale has blitzed his rivals with a three length win in Friday night’s Geelong Gold Cup.

The massive 39kg greyhound came from the midfield at the half way mark to overtake leader Ned’s Pedro and took home the $40,000 winning cheque.

Gripen Bale’s trainer, 28 year old Brendan Wheeler is blown away by the win however there were doubts over his chances due to the dog’s enormous size.

Travelling from The Oaks in New South Wales, Wheeler is a third generation greyhound racer and will add the Geelong Gold Cup to the long list of successes this family has won within the Australian greyhound racing industry.

Sired by Victorian greyhound Where’s Pedro, Gripen Bale also won the Group 2 Sir John Dillon Memorial at Sandown and Group 3 South Australian Derby at Angle Park.

Since his racing career began, the young sensation has won nine out of 12 starts and has placed second twice.

Gripen Bale will now prepare for the Hobart Thousand and $175,000 Melbourne Cup, held in the next two months.
